Adjusting the Controls
For your convenience, your refrigerator and freezer controls are preset at the factory. When you first install your refrigerator, make sure that both the refrigerator and freezer controls are still set to the recommended “mid-setting.” This will be displayed in the sequence of bars with three illuminated bars.

IMPORTANT:

■ Wait 24 hours before you put food into the refrigerator. If you add food before the refrigerator has cooled completely, your food may spoil.

NOTE: Adjusting the set points to a colder than recommended setting will not cool the compartments any faster.
■ If the temperature is too warm or too cold in the refrigerator or freezer, first check the air vents to be sure they are not blocked before adjusting the controls.
■ The preset settings should be correct for normal household usage. The controls are set correctly when milk or juice is as cold as you like and when ice cream is firm.
■ Wait at least 24 hours between adjustments. Recheck the temperatures before other adjustments are made. When adjusting set points, use the following chart as a guide:

CONDITION: ADJUSTMENT:
Refrigerator too cold Refrigerator setting one setting lower

Ice and Water

Water and Ice Dispensers

NOTES:
■ The dispensing system will not operate when the freezer door is open.
■ Allow 24 hours for the refrigerator to cool down and chill water.
■ Allow 24 hours to produce the first batch of ice. Discard the first three batches of ice produced. Wait 72 hours for full ice production.
■ The display screen on the dispenser control panel will turn off automatically and enter “sleep” mode when the control buttons and dispenser lever have not been used for 2 minutes or more. While in “sleep” mode, the first press of a control button will only reactivate the display screen, without changing any settings.

Flush the Water System
Air in the water dispensing system can cause the water dispenser to drip. After connecting the refrigerator to a water source or replacing the water filter, flush the water system. Flushing the water dispensing system forces air from the water line and filter, and prepares the water filter for use.
NOTE: As air is cleared from the system, water may spurt out of the dispenser.

  1. Using a sturdy container, depress and hold the water dispenser lever for 5 seconds, then release it for 5 seconds.
  2. Repeat Step 1 until water begins to flow.
  3. Once water begins to flow, continue depressing and releasing the dispenser lever (5 seconds on, 5 seconds off) until a total of 3 gal. (12 L) has been dispensed. Additional flushing may be required in some households.

The Water Dispenser
IMPORTANT:
■Dispense at least 1 qt (1 L) of water every week to maintain a fresh supply.
■If the flow of water from the dispenser decreases, it could be caused by low water pressure.
■With the water filter removed, dispense 1 cup (237 mL) of water. If 1 cup of water is dispensed in 8 seconds or less, the water pressure to the refrigerator meets the minimum requirement.
■If it takes longer than 8 seconds to dispense 1 cup of water, the water pressure to the refrigerator is lower than recommended. See “Water Supply Requirements”  (in the User Instructions or the Installation Instructions and Owner’s Manual) or “Troubleshooting” for suggestions.
To Dispense Water:

  1. Press a sturdy glass against the water dispenser lever. Hold the glass close to the water dispenser spout to ensure that the water dispenses into the glass.
  2. Remove the glass to stop dispensing.
IMPORTANT: The small tray at the bottom of the dispenser is designed to catch small spills and allow for easy cleaning.
There is no drain in the tray.

WARNING

Connect to potable water only

The Ice Dispenser
Ice dispenses from the ice maker storage bin in the freezer when the dispenser lever is pressed. To turn off the ice maker, see the
“Ice Maker and Storage Bin” section.
Your ice maker can produce both crushed and cubed ice. Before dispensing ice, select which type of ice you prefer by pressing the “Ice Type” button.
The display screen indicates which type of ice is selected.

Crushed Cubed

For crushed ice, cubes are crushed before being dispensed. This may cause a slight delay when dispensing crushed ice. Noise from the ice crusher is normal, and pieces of ice may vary in size. When changing from crushed to cubed, a few ounces of crushed ice will be dispensed along with the first cubes.

To Dispense Ice:

  1. Make sure the desired type of ice is selected.
    WARNING
    Cut Hazard
Use a sturdy glass when dispensing ice.
Failure to do so can result in cuts.
  2. Press a sturdy glass against the dispenser lever. Hold the glass close to the ice guide to ensure that the ice dispenses into the glass.
IMPORTANT: You do not need to apply a lot of pressure to the lever in order to activate the ice dispenser. Pressing hard will not make the ice dispense faster or in greater quantities.
  3. Remove the glass to stop dispensing.
NOTE: Ice may continue to dispense for several seconds after removing the glass from the lever. The dispenser may continue to make noise for a few seconds after dispensing.

The Dispenser Light
When you use the dispenser, the light will automatically turn on.
■If you want the light to be on continuously, press the “Light” button.
■Press LIGHT again to turn the dispenser light off. The dispenser lights are LEDs that cannot be changed. If it appears that your dispenser lights are not working,  see “Troubleshooting” for more information.

The Dispenser Lock
The dispenser can be turned off for easy cleaning or to avoid unintentional dispensing by small children and pets.
NOTE: The lock feature does not shut off power to the refrigerator, to the ice maker, or to the dispenser light. It simply deactivates the controls and dispenser lever. To turn off the ice maker, see the “Ice Maker and Storage Bin” section.

■ Press and hold LOCK for 3 seconds to lock the dispenser.
■ Press and hold LOCK a second time to unlock the dispenser. The display screen indicates when the dispenser is locked.

Ice Maker and Storage Bin

■ Allow 24 hours to produce the first batch of ice. Discard the first three batches of ice produced.
■ The quality of your ice will be only as good as the quality of the water supplied to your ice maker. Avoid connecting the ice maker to a softened water supply.  Water softener chemicals (such as salt can damage parts of the ice maker and lead to poor quality ice. If a softened water supply cannot be avoided, make sure the water softener is operating properly and is well maintained.
■ Do not use anything sharp to break up the ice in the storage bin. This can cause damage to the ice container and the dispenser mechanism.
■ Do not store anything on top of or in the ice maker or storage bin.

Turning the Ice Maker On/Off
The On/Off switch, located on the left wall of the freezer door, can only be accessed when the ice storage bin has been removed. See the following section for bin removal instructions.

■ To turn on the ice maker, flip the switch to the ON (up) position.
■ To manually turn off the ice maker, flip the switch to the OFF (down) position.
NOTE: The ice maker has an automatic shutoff to keep the storage bin from overfilling during normal operation. As ice is made, the ice cubes will fill the ice storage bin, and the ice cubes will raise the shutoff arm to the OFF (arm up) position. When the storage bin is at full capacity, the ice maker will automatically stop ice production, but the ice maker’s On/Off switch will remain in the ON (up) position.

Removing and Replacing the Ice Storage Bin

  1. Press down the release lever and tilt the bucket outward. Use both hands to hold the base of the storage bin, then lift it up and out.NOTE: It is not necessary to flip the icemaker On/Off switch to the OFF (down) position when removing the storage bin. The storage bin sensor, located on the left wall of the freezer door, stops the ice maker from producing ice if the door is open or the storage bin is removed.
  2. Replace the bin by sliding it onto the door, then tilting it back into an upright position. The release lever will click when the bin is securely in place.

Instructions and Owner’s Manual provided with your refrigerator, or visit our website and download the User Instructions for your model.

WARNING
Electrical Shock Hazard
Plug into a grounded 3 prong outlet. Do not remove the ground prong. Do not use an adapter. Do not use an extension cord. Failure to follow these instructions can result in death, fire, or electrical shock.
PROBLEM Possible Causes and/or Recommended Solutions
Refrigerator will not operate ■ Not connected to an electrical supply – Plug the power cord into a grounded 3 prong outlet. Do not use an extension cord.

■ No power to the electrical outlet – Plug in a lamp to see if the outlet is working.

■ Household fuse has blown or circuit breaker has tripped – Replace the fuse or reset the circuit breaker. If the problem continues, contact a licensed electrician.

■ New installation – Following installation, allow 24 hours for the refrigerator and freezer to cool completely.

NOTE: Adjusting the temperature control(s) to the coldest setting will not cool either compartment (refrigerator or freezer) more quickly.

Refrigerator seems noisy The compressor in your new refrigerator regulates temperature more efficiently and uses less energy than older models. During various stages of operation, you may hear normal operating sounds that are unfamiliar.

The following noises are normal:

■ Buzzing/Clicking – Heard when the water valve opens and closes to dispense water or fill the ice maker. If the refrigerator is connected to a water line, this is normal. If the refrigerator is not connected to a water line, turn off the ice maker.

■ Cracking/Crashing – Heard when ice is ejected from the ice maker mold.

■ Popping – Heard when the inside walls contract/expand, especially during initial cooldown.

■ Pulsating/Whirring – Heard when the fans/compressor adjust to optimize performance during normal operation.

■ Rattling – Heard when water passes through the waterline, or due to the flow of refrigerant. Rattling may also come from items placed on top of the refrigerator.

■ Water running or gurgling – Heard when ice melts during the defrost cycle and water runs into the drain pan.

■ Sizzling – Heard when water drips onto the heater during the defrost cycle.

Motor seems to run too much Your new refrigerator has an energy-efficient motor – The refrigerator may run longer than you’re used to, because the compressor and fans operate at lower speeds that are more energy-efficient. This is normal.

NOTE: Your refrigerator may run even longer if the room is warm, a large load of food is added, the doors are opened often, or if a door has been left open.

Temperature is too warm ■ New installation – Following installation, allow 24 hours for the refrigerator and freezer to cool completely.

NOTE: Adjusting the temperature control(s) to the coldest setting will not cool either compartment (refrigerator or freezer) more quickly.

■ Doors are opened often or not closed completely – This allows warm air to enter the refrigerator. Minimize door openings, keep the doors fully closed, and make sure both doors are properly sealed.

■ Air vents are blocked – Remove items that are immediately in front of the vents.

■ Large amount of warm food recently added – Allow several hours for the refrigerator to return to its normal temperature.

■ Controls are not set correctly for the surrounding conditions – Adjust the controls to a colder setting.

Check the temperature again in 24 hours. Temperature is too cold

■ Controls are not set correctly for the surrounding conditions – Adjust the controls to a warmer setting.

Check the temperature again in 24 hours.

Temperature is too cold ■ Controls are not set correctly for the surrounding conditions – Adjust the controls to a warmer setting.

Check the temperature again in 24 hours.

■ Top refrigerator shelf is colder than lower shelves – On some models, air from the freezer enters the refrigerator compartment through vents near the top refrigerator shelf. As a result, the top shelf can be slightly colder than lower shelves.

■ Air vents are blocked – Remove items that are immediately in front of the vents.

Interior moisture buildup NOTE: Some moisture buildup is normal. Clean with a soft dry cloth.

■ Room is humid – A humid environment contributes to moisture buildup. Use the refrigerator only in an indoor location, with as little humidity as possible.

■ Doors are opened often or not closed completely – This allows humid air to enter the refrigerator. Minimize door openings, keep the doors fully closed, and make sure both doors are properly sealed.

FAQS

Does Maytag make a side by side refrigerator?

With the toughness and performance you’ve come to expect from Maytag, our side-by-side refrigerators have in-door water and ice, Bright Series™ LED lighting and a ten-year limited parts warranty*, just in case anything goes wrong.

Are Maytag fridges reliable?

“Whirlpool is one of the longest-standing and most well-known brands in the appliance repair industry, and Maytag is now owned by the Whirlpool Corporation, so it’s not a surprise that these two familiar names come out on top for reliability,” the report says

How long do Maytag refrigerators last?

APPLIANCE LIFESPAN How long have you had your appliance? The average useful life for appliances range from 10.6 – 11.5 years1. If you still have several years left of use, it could be more cost-effective to repair.

Who makes Maytag refrigerator?

Whirlpool Corp. (WHR) is a leading home appliance company that sells products under a wide variety of brands such as Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag, Amana, Jenn-Air, and Consul.

Is Maytag made in China?

While Whirlpool has owned the Maytag name since 2006, Maytag is the oldest brand among laundry appliances made in the USA. Since its inception in 1893, Maytag has produced high-quality, USA made washer and dryer models.

Are Maytag and Whirlpool the same?

Maytag and Whirlpool are not the same company. Maytag was bought by Whirlpool in 2006, making Maytag a member of the Whirlpool Corporation. The design and manufacturing of each brand’s products is kept entirely separate

Why does my Maytag refrigerator leak water?

The most likely reasons your Maytag fridge leaks water are a clogged defrost drain, water filter problems, a damaged water inlet valve, or a cracked drain pan. The same will happen if the fridge isn’t level, as water can’t flow to the defrost drain to exit the refrigerator.

Is Maytag refrigerator quiet?

Though Maytag refrigerators run more quietly than ever before, they’re not completely silent. Most refrigerators make a variety of sounds during their day-to-day operation.

What temperature should my Maytag refrigerator be set at?

Your refrigerator temperature should stay between 32ºF – 40ºF (0ºC – 4.4ºC), with 37ºF being the ideal spot for most foods. Also take into consideration where you’re placing items, since there are certain compartments that will be cooler than others.

How old is my Maytag refrigerator by model number?

Find the year and month code. Each Maytag serial number contains two letters. These represent the year and month of manufacturing. They should be the ninth and 10th characters of the serial number.

Is Maytag still made in the USA?

Among clothes washers, “the Maytag, Whirlpool, and Amana washers are made in Clyde, Ohio; and the Maytag, Whirlpool, and Amana dryers are made in Marion, Ohio,” Blumenthal said.

What is the best month to buy a refrigerator?

The best time to buy appliances is when new models roll out: washers, dryers, and dishwashers in September and October, refrigerators in May, and ranges/ovens in January. When manufacturers unveil the latest models, retailers reduce prices on models from previous years to create more room for the new inventory.

Is GE and Maytag the same?

While those brands also carry premium price tags, Whirlpool, Maytag (which is owned by Whirlpool) and GE are among the more-mainstream names that build appliances both stateside and overseas.

When did Maytag go out of business?

When Maytag closed its doors in 2007, it was a rough transition. At the time, some 2,000 people were building washers and dryers at the old Maytag manufacturing facility.

What do Maytag model numbers mean?

All serial numbers have 10 digits. – The first two numbers are the production series number and the rest are the serialnumber– The two letters at the end are the YEAR and the MONTH respectively.

Why is my fridge leaking water onto the floor?

A clogged defrost drain is the most likely cause of your fridge leaking water. The defrost drain prevents the fridge from freezing. The fridge automatically defrosts itself and drips water down into a pan. Sometimes, food particles or other debris will clog the defrost drain.

Who makes Maytag appliances now?

“Whirlpool is one of the longest-standing and most well-known brands in the appliance repair industry, and Maytag is now owned by the Whirlpool Corporation, so it’s not a surprise that these two familiar names come out on top for reliability,” the report says.

Where are Maytag refrigerators made?

Under the Whirlpool name since 2006, most refrigerators are still made at one of the original Maytag manufacturing centers in Amana, Iowa. One of the best Maytag model refrigerators is their 36-inch, French door refrigerator.

REMEMBER: When the range is in use or (on some models) during the Self-Cleaning cycle, the entire cooktop area may become hot.

POSITIONING RACKS AND BAKEWARE
IMPORTANT: To avoid permanent damage to the porcelain finish, do not place food or bakeware directly on the oven door or bottom.
Racks

  • Position racks before turning on the oven.
  • Do not move racks with bakeware on them.
  • Make sure racks are level.

To move a rack, pull it out to the stop position, raise the front edge, and then lift out. Use the following illustration as a guide.

BAKING COOKIES AND LAYER CAKES ON 2 RACKS
Baking Layer Cakes
For best results when baking cakes on two racks, use the Bake function, a flat rack in rack position 4, and a flat rack in rack position 2. Place the cakes on the racks as shown. Keep at least 3″ (7.6 cm) of space between the front of the racks and the front cakes.

Baking Cookies
For best results when baking cookies on two racks, use the Convect Bake function (on some models) and place flat racks in positions 2 and 5.

ALUMINUM FOIL
IMPORTANT: To avoid permanent damage to the oven bottom finish, do not line the oven bottom with any type of foil or liner.
For best cooking results, do not cover the entire oven rack with foil because air must be able to move freely.
Care must be taken to prevent aluminum foil and meat probes from contacting heating elements.

OVEN VENT
The oven vent releases hot air and moisture from the oven, and should not be blocked or covered. Blocking or covering the oven vent will cause poor air circulation, affecting cooking and cleaning results. Do not set plastics, paper, or other items that could melt or burn near the oven vent.

Dishwasher Safety

Your safety and the safety of others are very important.

We have provided many important safety messages in this manual and on your appliance. Always read and obey all safety messages. This is the safety alert symbol. This symbol alerts you to potential hazards that can kill or hurt you and others. All safety messages will follow the safety alert symbol and either the word “DANGER” or “WARNING.” These words mean: You can be killed or seriously injured if you don’t immediately follow instructions. You can be killed or seriously injured if you don’t follow instructions. All safety messages will tell you what the potential hazard is, tell you how to reduce the chance of injury, and tell you what can happen if the instructions are not followed.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

WARNING: When using the dishwasher, follow basic precautions, including the following:

  • Read all instructions before using the dishwasher.
  • Use the dishwasher only for its intended function.
  • Use only detergents or rinse agents recommended for use in a dishwasher, and keep them out of the reach of children.
  • When loading items to be washed:
  •  Locate sharp items so that they are not likely to damage the door seal; and
Load sharp knives with the handles up to reduce the risk of cut-type injuries.
  • Do not wash plastic items unless they are marked “dishwasher safe” or the equivalent. For plastic items not so marked, check the manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Do not touch the heating element during or immediately after use.
  • Do not operate the dishwasher unless all enclosure panels are properly in place.
  • Do not tamper with controls.
  • Do not abuse, sit on, or stand on the door, lid, or dish racks of the dishwasher.
  • To reduce the risk of injury, do not allow children to play in or on the dishwasher.
  • Under certain conditions, hydrogen gas may be produced in a hot water system that has not been used for two weeks or more.
  • HYDROGEN GAS IS EXPLOSIVE. If the hot water system has not been used for such a period, before using the dishwasher turn on all hot water faucets and let the water flow from each for several minutes. This will release any accumulated hydrogen gas. As the gas is flammable, do not smoke or use an open flame during this time.
  • Remove the door or lid to the washing compartment when removing an old dishwasher from service or discarding it.

SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS

GROUNDING INSTRUCTIONS

Check with a qualified electrician or service representative if you are in doubt whether the dishwasher is properly grounded. Do not modify the plug provided with the dishwasher; if it will not fit the outlet, have a proper outlet installed by a qualified electrician. For a permanently connected dishwasher: The dishwasher must be connected to a grounded metal, permanent wiring system, or an equipment-grounding conductor must be run with the circuit conductors and connected to the equipment-grounding terminal or lead on the dishwasher.

WARNING

  • Tip-Over Hazard Do not use dishwasher until completely installed.
  • Do not push down on the open door.
  • Doing so can result in serious injury or cuts.

What’s New in Your Dishwasher

Energy
Congratulations on purchasing your water and energy-efficient dishwasher! This dishwasher cleans by spraying the dishes with water and pauses to allow the detergent to soak into and release the soils on the dishes. The cycles are longer due to the soak and pause for exceptional cleaning. Your dishwasher contains an optical water sensor. The optical water sensor is used to determine the optimum water and energy consumption for great cleaning performance. Efficient dishwashers run longer to save water and energy, just as driving a car slower saves on gas. The first cycle using the sensor will run longer to calibrate the optical sensor.

Performance

Rinse Aid

Using rinse aid will optimize your drying and wash performance. This dishwasher is specifically designed to be used with rinse aid for improved drying performance and controlling buildup of hard water deposits. The use of rinse aid greatly improves drying by allowing water to drain from the dishes after the final rinse. Rinse aid also keeps water from forming droplets that can dry as spots or streaks.

Detergent

The United States and Canada have passed restrictions limiting the amount of phosphorus (phosphates) in household dishwasher detergents to reduce the impact of detergents on our environment. Major manufacturers have reformulated their dishwasher detergent. With these recent changes, it is recommended to use tablets and packs for convenience and improved performance.

Filtration System

Your dishwasher has the latest technology in dishwasher filtration. The Clean Water Wash system continuously removes food particles from the wash water for excellent performance. Plus, there is no need to ever remove and clean the filter.

Parts and Features

Start-Up/Quick Reference

Drying – Rinse Aid is essential

You must use a drying agent such as a rinse aid for good drying performance. Rinse aid along with the Heated Dry option will provide improve drying and avoid excessive moisture in dishwasher interior.

Quick Wash – When you need fast results

Efficient dishwashers run longer to save water and energy,
just as driving a car slower saves on gas. When you need fast results, the Quick Wash will clean your dishes using slightly more water and energy. Select a heated drying option to include automatic drying.

Press START every time you add a dish

IMPORTANT: If the door is opened after starting the dishwasher (even during the Delay hours), the START button must be pressed each time.
Push door firmly closed and press the START button. If the START button is not pressed, the START button light will flash, an audible tone will be heard and cycle will not start.

Proper Detergent Dosing

We recommend quality tablets and packs for convenience and improved performance. When using other forms of detergent, it is possible to use too much. This can lead to etching of your dishes. See “Add Detergent” in the Dishwasher Use section, to determine the amount of detergent needed based on soil level and water hardness.

Remove bulk food and load dishwasher.

Add detergent and rinse aid.

Select a cycle and options.

The status display will indicate cycle progress such as Add Dish, Washing, Drying, Clean and Sanitized. The cycle has completed when the Clean light is lit. Refer to the Controls and Cycle Status section for operation of the Sanitized indicator.

Start dishwasher.

To start and resume a cycle, firmly close the door and press the START keypad. If the START button is not pressed, the START keypad light will flash, an audible tone will sound, and the cycle will not start.

Dishwasher Use

STEP 1

Prepare and Load the Dishwasher
IMPORTANT: Remove leftover food, bones, toothpicks, and other hard items from the dishes. Remove labels from containers before washing.

Check that nothing blocks the upper or lower spray arm. Items in rack can block the spray arms.

  •  Check that when the dishwasher door is closed, no items are blocking the detergent dispenser.
  •  Tough soiled items should be loaded with soiled surfaces facing down and inward to the spray. This will improve cleaning and drying results.
  •  Avoid overlapping items like bowls or plates that may trap food.
  •  Place plastics, small plates, and glasses in the upper rack. Wash only plastic items marked “dishwasher safe.”
  •  To avoid thumping/clattering noises during operation, load dishes so they do not touch one another. Make sure lightweight load items are secured in the racks.
  •  When loading silverware, always place sharp items pointing down. If you remove the slotted covers from the silverware basket, mix items in each section of the basket with some pointing up and some down to avoid nesting. Spray cannot reach nested items.
  •  Use slots in the covers and suggested loading patterns to keep your silverware separated for an optimum wash.

STEP 2

Add Detergent
Premeasured Detergents High-quality premeasured tablets are recommended for improved for performance.

Quality tablets and packs have been proven better than powder, liquid, or gel detergents at reducing filming on dishes. Using tablets and packs over time will start to reduce or eliminate white film. They are suitable for all hardness and soil levels. Also, by using a rinse aid, you can minimize the repeat buildup of the white film (not all packs and tablets contain rinse aid). Always place premeasured detergents in the main compartment and close the lid.
NOTE: Follow instructions on the package when using other dishwasher detergent types or use the chart below for standard powdered detergents.

  • Use automatic dishwasher detergent only. Add detergent just before starting a cycle.
  •  Fresh automatic dishwasher detergent results in better cleaning. Store tightly closed detergent containers in a cool dry place

Rinse Aid

IMPORTANT: Your dishwasher is designed to use rinse aid. The use of rinse aids greatly improves drying by allowing water to drain from the dishes after the final rinse. Rinse aid also keeps water from forming droplets that can dry as spots or streaks.
Filling the dispenser
The dispenser holds 5 oz (150 mL) of rinse aid. Under most conditions, this will last 1 to 3 months.

NOTE: Indicator reads correct fill level when door is completely opened.

1. To add rinse aid, open the rinse dispenser lid by gently pushing in the center of the lid with your thumb and pulling up on the edge.
Pour rinse aid into the opening until the dispenser is full. Do You can add an item at the beginning of the cycle. Open the
3. Clean up any spilled rinse aid. Spilled rinse aid can create excessive suds.
4. Close the dispenser by pushing down gently on the lid.

Rinse Aid Setting

Your rinse aid dispenser is adjustable. For most water conditions, the factory setting will give good results. If you have hard water and notice calcium buildup on your dishware, you may want to try a higher setting. If you notice foam in your dishwasher, use a lower setting.
To adjust the setting:
Turn the arrow adjuster to a higher number to increase the amount of rinse aid. If you change the setting only change it one number at a time and run a few cycles before changing it again. Too much rinse aid can reduce cleaning performance and too little may leave spots or rings.

STEP 4

Select a Cycle
Efficient dishwashers run longer to save water and energy,
just as driving a car slower saves gas. Typical cycle time is approximately 21/2 hours but can take less or more time to complete depending on selections. Press START keypad to select the Auto cycle or select another cycle appropriate for your load (see Cycle Guide).

Select Options
See the “Cycle and Option Descriptions” chart in the following section.
You can customize the cycles by selecting the options desired and pressing the START keypad.

STEP 5

Start Cycle

  •  If needed, run hot water at the sink nearest your dishwasher until the water is hot. Turn off water.

Dishwasher Features

Silverware Basket

Silverware basket lids:
Use silverware basket lids to provide optimal spacing and the best cleaning performance.
NOTE: If your silverware does not fit into the designated slots, push tabs inward on either end and lift lid off of the silverware baskets. Mix silverware types to keep them separated. Load knives with handles up. Alternate forks and spoons with handles both up and down for best cleaning results.

Stemware Guides (On some models)
Stemware guides are designed on the cup shelf. Use them to hold stemware more securely.

Cup Shelves
Fold-down the extra shelf on the left-hand or right-hand side of the top rack to hold additional cups, stemware, or long items such as utensils and spatulas. For best results on cups, stagger the spacing so that the cups on the shelf are not directly above the cups below.

Cycle and Option Descriptions

Estimated cycle times may increase or decrease depending on water temperature, soil conditions, dish load size, and options selected. You can customize your cycle by selecting options.
See option selections. If you change your mind, press the option again to turn off the option, or select a different option. You can change an option anytime before the selected option begins. At each stage of the wash cycle, you may hear noises that you are not used to hearing in your previous dishwasher. Each cycle will provide a series of pauses and water sprays throughout the wash cycle. This is normal and will provide optimal cleaning performance.
CYCLE SELECTIONS
IMPORTANT: The sensor in your dishwasher monitors the soil level. Cycle time and/or water usage can vary as the sensor adjusts the cycle for the best wash performance. If the incoming water is less than the recommended temperature or food soils are heavy, the cycle will automatically compensate by adding time, heat, and water as needed.

Dishwasher Care

Cleaning the Exterior
Clean the exterior of the dishwasher with only a soft, damp cloth, and mild detergent. If your dishwasher has a stainless steel exterior, it may have a coating that is resistant to fingerprints. Avoid using abrasive cleaning products on the exterior of the dishwasher.

Cleaning and Maintaining the Interior
Many detergents may leave white spots or a white residue on dishware and on the interior of the dishwasher. Over time this residue can become unsightly and could affect dishwasher performance. Use of a dishwasher cleaning product such as affresh®† Dishwasher Cleaner can help to remove the residue. Monthly use of affresh®† Dishwasher Cleaner is recommended to help maintain the dishwasher.
To Use:

  1.  If cleaning without dishes, place one tablet in the detergent dispenser. Do not add detergent (If significant buildup is noticeable, a second tablet can be placed in the bottom of the dishwasher.)
  2.  If cleaning with dishes, place one tablet in the bottom of the dishwasher. Place detergent in the dispenser.
  3.  Run a Normal wash cycle.
Another method to remove white residue is to use a vinegar rinse. However, vinegar is an acid, and using it too often could damage your dishwasher. Place (do not pour), 2 cups (500 mL) white vinegar in a glass or dishwasher-safe two-cup capacity container on the bottom rack. Run the dishwasher through a complete washing cycle using an air-dry or an energy-saving dry option. Do not use detergent. Vinegar will mix with the wash water. NOTE: Maytag recommends the use of high-quality, premeasured detergent tablets or packs, and the use of rinse aid for dishwasher cleaning and daily care.
If you have a drain air gap, check and clean it if the dishwasher isn’t draining well.

To Reduce Risk of Property Damage During Vacation or Extended Time Without Use

  •  When you will not be using the dishwasher during the summer months, turn off the water and power supply to the dishwasher.
  •  Make sure the water supply lines are protected against freezing conditions. Ice formations in the supply lines can increase water pressure and cause damage to your dishwasher or home.
  •  Damage from freezing is not covered by the warranty.
  •  When storing your dishwasher in the winter, avoid water damage by having your dishwasher winterized by authorized service personnel.

PROBLEM SOLUTION
DISHWASHER DOES NOT RUN NOTE: It is normal for the dishwasher to repeatedly pause several times during a cycle.

If the Start light is blinking, press the START keyoad and close the door within 4 seconds. Be sure the door is closed and latched.

■       Check that there is not an interference with large casserole dishes and the wash system at the back of the dishwasher.

■       Check to see if any items are protruding through the bottom or back of the rack. Also check to see if tall items are hitting the upper rack or spray arm. Adjust loading as necessary to ensure door is closed and latched.

Press the START keypads or open and close the door before selecting your cycle/option. Controls must be awakened after a period of inactivity.

Be sure the Control/Lock feature is not on. If the control lock indicator is lit, press and hold SANI RINSE for 3 seconds. The Control Lock light will turn off and you can then operate the controls.

Be sure you have selected a cycle. See “Cycle and Option Descriptions” section.

Be sure there is power to the dishwasher. A circuit breaker or fuse may have tripped. If lights other than Start blink and the unit will not run, you will need to call for service.

DETERGENT REMAINS IN THE DISPENSER OR TABLET IS ON BOTTOM OF TUB Check for dishware such as cookie sheets, cutting boards, or large containers, etc., that may be blocking the detergent dispenser from opening properly.

Be sure your detergent is fresh and lump free.

Be sure the cycle has completed (the Clean light is on). If it has not completed, you will need to resume the cycle by closing the door and pressing START.

CYCLE RUNS TOO LONG NOTES:

■       To use less water and reduce energy consumption, you will encounter cycles that typically run for up to 3 hours.

■       A water heater setting of 120°F (49°C) is best the dishwasher will delay longer while heating cooler water.

■       Some options will add time to the cycle. See the “Cycle and Option Descriptions” section. The Heat Dry option adds approximately 45 minutes.

Try the Quick Wash cycle.

Run the hot water at a faucet close to the dishwasher before starting the cycle.

DISHWASHER NOT DRYING NOTE: Plastic and items with nonstick surfaces are difficult to dry because they have a porous surface, which tends to collect water droplets. Towel drying may be necessary.

Use of rinse aid along with the Heated Dry option is needed for proper drying.

Proper loading of items can affect drying. (See specific loading instructions within this guide.)

Glasses and cups with concave bottoms hold water. This water may spill onto other items when unloading.

■       Unload the bottom rack first.

■       Locate these items on the more slanted side of the rack for improved results.

WILL NOT FILL Be sure the water to the dishwasher is turned on.

Check that the overfill protection float is free from obstructions. See the “Parts and Features” section.

Check for suds in the dishwasher. If foam or suds are detected, the dishwasher may not operate properly or may not fill with water. See “Blinking Lights” in the “Troubleshooting” section.

PROBLEM SOLUTION
WATER REMAINS IN THE TUB/WILL NOT DRAIN Be sure the cycle has completed (the Clean indicator is on). If it has not, you will need to resume the cycle by pressing closing the door and pressing the START keypad.

If dishwasher is connected to a food waste disposer, be sure the knockout plug has been removed from the disposer inlet.

Check for kinks in the drain hose.

Check for food obstructions in the drain or disposer. Check your house fuse or circuit breaker.

HARD WATER (WHITE RESIDUE ON

DISHWASHER INTERIOR OR GLASSWARE)

NOTE: Extremely hard water mineral deposits can cause damage to your dishwasher and make it difficult to achieve good cleaning. A water softener is strongly recommended if your hardness is 15 grains or more. If a water softener is not installed, the following steps may help:

Use a commercial cleaner (affresh®† dishwasher cleaner recommended) designed for dishwashers once per month.

Always use a rinse aid.

Always use a high-quality, fresh detergent.

Use a detergent booster/water softener additive designed for dishwashers.

ODORS NOTE: If the dishwasher is not used daily, you can run a rinse cycle with the partial load until a full load is ready to run.

Run a vinegar rinse through the dishwasher by putting 2 cups (500 mL) of white vinegar in an upright 2-cup glass measuring cup in the lower rack. Run a Normal cycle with the Heat Dry option turned off. Do not use detergent.

The dishwasher may not be draining properly, see “Water Remains In The Tub/Will Not Drain” in the “Troubleshooting” section.

NOISY Surging sounds can occur periodically throughout the cycle while the dishwasher is draining. Normal water valve hissing may be heard periodically.

A normal snap sound may be heard when the detergent dispenser opens during the cycle and when the door is opened at the end of the cycle.

Improper installation will affect noise levels.

A thumping sound may be heard if items extend beyond the racks and interfere with the wash arms.

Readjust the dishware and resume the cycle.

FOOD SOILS REMAIN ON DISHES Be sure the dishwasher is loaded correctly. Improper loading can greatly decrease the washing performance. See the “Dishwasher Use” section.

Select the proper cycle and option for the type of soils. The PowerBlast® cycle with the High Temp Wash option can be used for tougher loads.

Be sure the incoming water temperature is at least 120°F (49°C).

Use the proper amount of fresh detergent. More detergent is needed for heavier soiled loads and hard water conditions.

Scrape food from dishes prior to loading (do not prerinse).

DISHES DIRTY/SUDS IN DISHWASHER/CYCLE NOT COMPLETE If foam or suds are detected by the dishwasher sensing system, the dishwasher may not operate properly or may not fill with water.

Suds can come from:

■       Using the incorrect type of detergent, such as dish detergent for hand washing dishes, laundry detergent, or hand soap.

■       Not replacing the rinse aid dispenser cap after filling (or refilling) the rinse aid.

■       Using an excessive amount of dishwasher detergent.

■       Inadequate rinsing off detergent from dishes washed by hand before loading them into the dishwasher.

Call for service.

If no water was present in the machine at any time during a heated wash cycle, the cycle will end and the Clean indicator will not come on. See “Will Not Fill” in the “Troubleshooting” section.

DID NOT SANITIZE If the Sanitized light is blinking, the load is NOT sanitized. The cycle was interrupted  in the final rinse or the temperature for your water heater is set too low. Set your water heater to 120ºF (49°C).
DAMAGE TO DISHWARE Improper loading can cause dishes to become chipped or damaged. (See specific loading instructions within this guide.)
PROBLEM SOLUTION
BLINKING LIGHTS Blinking indicators will occur when the cycle is paused or when the cycle has been interrupted by opening the door. If the Start light is blinking, press the START keypad.

See START Cycle in the “Dishwasher Use” section.

If the Clean light or any other lights are blinking and the dishwasher will not run, call for service.

CLOUDY OR SPOTTED DISHWARE (AND HARD WATER SOLUTION) Add or adjust the amount of liquid rinse aid for better drying and to reduce spotting. See the “Detergent and Rinse Aid” section.

Use the correct amount of detergent.

Confirm that the cloudiness is removable by soaking the item in white vinegar for 5 minutes. Dry the item. If the cloudiness disappears, it is due to hard water. Adjust the amount of detergent and rinse aid. See “Hard Water (White Residue on Dishwasher Interior or Glassware)” in the “Troubleshooting” section. If it does not come clear, it is due to etching (see below).

Be sure the incoming water temperature is set at 120°F (49°C). Try using the High Temp Wash and Sani Rinse options.

To remove spotting run a vinegar rinse through the dishwasher using the description in the Cleaning and Maintaining the Interior section.

ETCHING (PERMANENT CLOUDINESS) This is an erosion of the surface of the glassware and can be caused by a combination of water that is too hot, from using too much detergent with soft water, or by

pre-washing. Detergent needs food soil to act upon. If etching has occurred, the glassware is permanently damaged. To avoid further etching, adjust the detergent amount to match the water hardness, stop pre-washing, and use water heating options only when incoming water temperature is below 120°F (49°C).

LEAKING WATER Be sure dishwasher has been installed properly and is level.

Suds can cause the dishwasher to overflow. Measure the detergent accurately and use only detergents designed for use in a dishwasher. Less detergent is needed in soft water. Try another brand of detergent if sudsing continues.

To avoid rinse aid leaking from the dispenser, be sure the lid is securely attached and avoid overfilling.

TUB IS DISCOLORED High iron content in the water can discolor the tub.

Tomato-based and other foods, can discolor the tub or dishware. Large amounts of food with curry, chili powder, paprika, mustard and similar spices and tomato-based foods should be removed from the dishes before loading.

A citrus-based cleaner can be used to clean the tub.

FAQ’S

How do I add a fabric softener sheet to the wash cycle?

Add the fabric softener sheet to the wash load when you add clothes.

How do I remove a fabric softener sheet from the wash cycle?

Remove the fabric softener sheet from the wash load during the rinse cycle.

What is the difference between “Cold” and “Cool” temperature settings?

The “Cold” setting is for lightly soiled items and/or water temperatures below 120°F (49°C). The “Cool” setting is for lightly soiled items and/or water temperatures at 120°F (49°C) or above.

What is the difference between “Warm” and “Hot” temperature settings?

The “Warm” setting is for lightly soiled items and/or water temperatures at 120°F (49°C) or above. The “Hot” setting is for heavily soiled items and/or water temperatures at 120°F (49°C) or above.

What are soil levels?

Soil levels are used to determine how much soil was in your clothes before they were washed. For example, if you have a new pair of jeans with little or no soil, you would select a low soil level. If you have an older pair of jeans with lots of soil, you would select a high soil level.

What are spin speeds?

Spin speeds determine how long your clothes will spin in the washer before stopping. For example, if you have a new pair of jeans with little or no soil, you would select a low spin speed. If you have an older pair of jeans with lots of soil, you would select a high spin speed.

Where is the filter on a Maytag top load washing machine?

In top-loading machines the filters are in the center of the agitator tube. They can be removed by taking off the agitator cap and pulling the filter upward. Lint and debris can then be removed by hand before replacing the filter.

How do I clean the filter on my Maytag top loader without agitator?

The quickest way to clean out your filter is to remove it from the unit and soak it in hot water, loosening any clog or trapped residue. If the filter cannot be removed, clean it out with brush. Some filters are disposable, so instead of cleaning them you can just throw them away and put a new one in place.

How do I deep clean my top load washing machine?

Take some Chlorine-bleach, pour 1 quart into the water filled washer, and then let it agitate for 1 minute. Afterwards, just let it sit for one hour so it can soak. Finally, run the longest cycle you can from your washing machine settings without adding any detergent. One more time!

Why is my Maytag washer not draining or spinning?

If the washer won’t drain or spin, either something is stuck in the washing machine drain hose or pump, or the pump is broken.

How do I reset my Maytag washer that won’t spin?

Press and hold the Start/Pause button for 3 seconds. All indicator lights should be off at this point. Reset the Washer: To reset (clear) the washer, rotate the Cycle Selector Knob counter-clockwise (left) to clear any sequence.

How do you manually unlock a Maytag top load washer?

If you remove the top washer panel, you can reach down into the washer and pull the tear shaped tab at the bottom of the door lock and it will unlock the door. On some of the Maytag washing machine models, there is a green plastic rope/string located near the detergent area that if pulled, will unlock the door.

LOADING RECOMMENDATION

For best performance, it is recommended to load items by dropping them in loose heaps evenly around the washplate and agitator. Do not lay items length-wise around the washplate or agitator.

MORE WATER WHEN YOU WANT IT

AUTO SENSING & DEEP FILL

  • The washer will adjust the water level to the optimal amount for a High Efficiency wash of the detected load size.
  • Press “Deep Fill” button to add more water to the wash load.
  • There are three levels of deep water “Auto”, “Medium”, and “High”.
  • Not all levels available on all cycles.

CLEANING WITH LESS WATER

As the washer dampens and moves the load, the level of the items will settle in the basket.
This is normal, and does not indicate that more items should be added.
IMPORTANT: You will not see a washer basket full of water as with your past agitator-style washer. It is normal for some of the load to be above the water line.
