HOW TO STEAM MILK

  1. Fill the water tank to the “MAX” marking with clean, fi ltered water.
  2. Turn the coffeemaker ON by using the power switch on the side.
NOTE: The ready indicator light will pulse while the coffeemaker heats up and will turn solid when the coffeemaker is ready to use.
  3. Fill a milk pitcher or cup about 1/3 to ½ full with cold milk.
NOTE: Any type of milk can be used – soy, rice, almond, coconut, etc. – but 2% fat dairy milk creates the best froth.
  4. Insert the milk frothing wand tip just below the surface of the milk.
  5. Turn the knob to the “steam” position.
NOTE: The ready indicator light will pulse while the water is heating up. Once the coffeemaker reaches the correct temperature, the ready indicator light will turn solid. Some water and steam may come out of milk frothing wand while the coffeemaker heats up.
  6. Steam your milk until it reaches the desired texture and temperature.
NOTE: Steaming milk makes a hissing noise.
  7. When finished, turn the knob to the “standby” position. Then, remove the milk frothing wand from the milk pitcher or cup.
NOTE: After steaming milk, the knob must be turned to the “standby” position until the ready indicator light turns solid. If the knob is turned directly to the “brew” position after steaming milk, the coffeemaker will beep, the display will go blank and the coffeemaker will not brew coffee. To fi x the error, the knob will need to be turned to the “standby” position until the ready indicator light turns solid.
  8. Remember to clean the milk frothing wand after every use. For instructions on how to do so, please refer to the cleaning section on page 12.
  9. Enjoy!
NOTE: When the knob is turned to the “standby” position after steaming milk, the coffeemaker will enter an automatic cool-down cycle that lasts approximately 35 seconds. During this cycle, the ready indicator light with pulse and water will be released into the drip tray though an internal channel. Steam may be emitted from the drip tray. When the ready indicator light turns solid, the coffeemaker has cooled down and is ready to use.

Helpful Tips for Steaming Milk:

  1. Insert the milk frothing wand tip just below the surface of the milk.
  2. Position the milk frothing wand and milk pitcher or cup at an angle that allows the milk to move in a whirlpool pattern.
  3. As the milk level rises, lower the milk pitcher or cup to keep the milk frothing wand tip just below the surface.
  4. When the desired texture is achieved, immerse the milk frothing wand half way.

ROUTINE CLEANING

Make sure your coffeemaker is unplugged and has cooled completely before cleaning. We recommend hand washing all removable parts to help preserve their appearance.

Pot of Coffee

  1. Remove the brew basket, brew basket lid, filter, coffee pot and coffee pot lid and wash them with warm water and mild liquid soap. Dry thoroughly.

Single Serve

  1. Remove the single serve portafilter from the coffeemaker carefully and dump any remaining water into the sink before lifting the lid. Then, discard the K-Cup® Pod into the trash bin
  2. Rinse the single serve portafilter with water, shake the water off and dry it on the outside.
WARNING: There is a sharp needle at the bottom of the single serve portafilter.

Espresso

  1. Remove the espresso portafilter from the coffeemaker. Then, release the filter retainer clip and press it over the filter. Hold it in place while you tap the espresso portafilter against the trash bin to discard the espresso grounds.
  2. Remove the filter from the espresso portafilter by twisting the filter until the bump on the filter is aligned with the notch on the espresso portafilter. Wash the filter and the espresso portafilter with warm water and mild liquid soap.
  3. Place the filter back into the espresso portafilter and insert the espresso portafilter back into the coffeemaker. Follow the same steps for brewing espresso, but with no espresso in the filter. Discard the water in the cup.
  4. Remove the espresso portafilter from the coffeemaker. Dry the filter and espresso portafilter thoroughly.

Milk Frothing Wand

  1. Remove the milk frothing wand cover and wash with warm water and mild liquid soap.
  2. With a damp cloth, wipe down the metal on the milk frothing wand.
  3. Fill the water tank and place a jug under the milk frothing wand.
  4. Turn the knob to the “steam” position and press the clean button. The clean indicator light will illuminate and the coffeemaker will enter a 2-minute clean cycle.
  5. When the clean indicator light turns off, turn the knob to the “standby” position. The coffeemaker will then enter an automatic cool-down cycle that lasts approximately 35 seconds

Deep Cleaning the Espresso Filters

Make sure to deep clean your espresso filters every 90 days for optimal brewing performance. Follow these disassembly instructions and rinse the pieces in a large bowl of warm water. Once rinsed thoroughly, wipe dry and reassembleRemoving the filtersEmptying the Drip Tray

  1. When the water level indicator rises above the drip tray cover, carefully slide the drip tray out from the coffeemaker, remove the drip tray cover, and discard the water.
  2. Place the drip tray cover back on the drip tray and slide it into the coffeemaker.

DESCALING

After continued use, your coffeemaker may develop a build-up of mineral deposits, and therefore require occasional descaling. We recommend descaling your coffeemaker every 4-6 months, although this period will depend on the hardness of water and frequency of use.

IMPORTANT: If the descaling process is not completed or stopped part way through any of the descaling steps, you will need to start the descaling process again from the beginning.

Descaling: Coffeemaker

  1. In an empty water tank, add 1 1/2 tablespoons of white vinegar and 4 cups of water. Allow the solution to mix thoroughly.
  2. Place the water tank into position.
  3. Insert the brew basket into the coffeemaker without coffee in it.
  4. Place the coffee pot on the drip tray cover.
  5. Turn ON the coffeemaker.
  6. Turn the knob to the “brew” position.
  7. Press the clean button. During the descaling process, the clean indicator light will be on.
NOTE: When the descaling process is complete, the clean indicator light will turn off and the ready indicator light will illuminate.
  8. When the clean indicator light turns off, discard the water in the coffee pot.
  9. Repeat steps 1-8 using clean water without vinegar.
  10. Rinse the water tank, brew basket, brew basket lid, and coffee pot with warm water and mild liquid soap

HELPFUL HINTS

Initial Cleansing Brew – Before you use your Brewer for the first time, perform an initial cleansing brew by running clean water through the brew cycle without using a K-Cup® pack or coffee grounds in the reusable filter.

One Cup at a Time – Your new Brewer makes one fresh beverage at a time. You’ll need to add fresh water each time you brew.

The Right Water Makes a Difference – For the best tasting gourmet coffee, tea or hot cocoa, we recommend using bottled or filtered water. We do not recommend using distilled or reverse osmosis water. Water quality varies from place to place. If you notice an undesirable taste in your cup of coffee such as chlorine or other mineral taste, we recommend you consider using bottled water or water from a filtration system.

Customize Your Flavor & Brew – With 2 ways to brew you can choose your favorite ground coffee or over 200 varieties of K-Cup® Packs, your Brewer gives you endless options to customize the flavor and strength that’s perfect for you. For a strong, intense cup, select an Extra Bold K-Cup® Pack (with up to 30% more ground coffee than regular varieties). Fill the Water Reservoir with filtered or bottled water up to the FILL LEVEL indicator and brew normally.

Brewing Into a Tall Mug – To brew into a tall mug, simply remove the Drip Tray Assembly and place the tall mug on the Drip Tray Base.

The Drip Tray – Any liquid overflow (from your cup) will be caught in the Drip Tray. Be sure to empty the Drip Tray. The Drip Tray has a snug fit to ensure it stays put in transit.

Clean Your Brewer Regularly – To keep your Brewer looking and performing its best, be sure to clean the external and internal components on a regular basis. See page 11 for more information.

De-Scaling – Mineral content in water varies from place to place. Depending on the mineral content of the water in your area, calcium deposits or scale may build up in your Brewer. Scale is non-toxic, but left unattended, it can hinder Brewer performance. De-scaling your Brewer helps maintain the heating element and other internal parts of the Brewer that come in contact with water. See page 13 for more information.

Storing – When storing your Brewer, carefully empty the Drip Tray and make sure the Water Reservoir is empty. Store your Brewer upright in a safe, dry, frost-free environment.

CLEANING AND MAINTAINING YOUR SINGLE SERVE 1.0

Cleaning External Parts

CAUTION: Make sure the Brewer is unplugged before cleaning.

Regular cleaning of the Brewer’s external components is recommended.

  1. The Housing and other external components may be cleaned with a soapy, damp, non-abrasive cloth.
CAUTION: Never immerse the Brewer in water or other liquids.
  2. The Drip Tray can accumulate liquids. The Drip Tray and Drip Tray Plate should be periodically inspected and cleaned with a damp soapy nonabrasive lint free cloth. The Drip Tray and Drip Tray Plate should not be put into the dishwasher. To remove the Drip Tray Assembly, simply slide it toward you, keeping it level at all times to avoid spilling
Cleaning the K-Cup
  1. Cleaning the Parts – The K-Cup® Pack Holder Assembly can be placed onto the top shelf of a dishwasher.
NOTE: Use low temperature cycles in the dishwasher. To remove from the Brewer, pull forward the front face of the Brewer. Grasp the top of the K-Cup® Pack Holder with one hand while pushing up on the bottom of the K-Cup® Pack Holder from underneath with the other until it releases. After cleaning, align the K-Cup® Pack Holder with the opening using the two front ribs as a guide, and snap into place from the top.
  2. Cleaning the Funnel – The Funnel can be removed from the K-Cup® Pack Holder by pulling on it until it snaps off (fig. 1). The Funnel is dishwasher safe. To replace it, just snap it back onto the K-Cup® Pack Holder Assembly.
  3. Cleaning the Exit Needle – The Exit Needle is located on the inside bottom of the K-Cup® Pack Holder Assembly. Should a clog arise due to coffee grinds, it can be cleaned using a clean household tool. Remove K-Cup® Pack Holder assembly and detach Funnel. Insert the household tool into the Needle to loosen the clog and push it out. The K-Cup® Pack Holder is dishwasher safe.
CAUTION: There are sharp needles that puncture the K-Cup® Pack above the K-Cup® Pack Holder and in the bottom of the K-Cup® Pack Holder. To avoid risk of injury, do not put your fingers in the K-Cup® Pack Assembly Housing.
NOTE: Over time, discoloration, spotting or staining may appear in the Water Reservoir. This is normal and will vary depending on the mineral content of the bottled or filtered water used in the Brewer and will not affect the operation of the Brewer.
Cleaning the Water Reservoir

To access the Water Reservoir, simply open the Water Reservoir Lid. Inspect the Water Reservoir area and clean with a damp lint free cloth as necessary. Close the Water Reservoir Lid when finished.

Emptying the Water Reservoir
  1. Ensure that the Water Reservoir Lid is closed.
  2. Place a cup on the Drip Plate then press and hold the BREW Button until all the water has been dispensed. Note, there will be a delay of 4-5 seconds until water starts to dispense.
Storage

Empty the Water Reservoir before storing and take care to ensure that you store your Brewer in a safe and frost free environment. It is suggested to store your Brewer in the upright position. If you store the Brewer in a cold environment, you run the risk of condensation freezing inside the Brewer and causing damage. When you prepare to use it after storage, we recommend wiping the Water Reservoir with a damp lint-free cloth and running three cleansing brews without a K-Cup® Pack.

If your Brewer has been in an environment below freezing, please be sure to let it warm to room temperature for 2 hours before using.

De-Scaling Your Brewer

Mineral content in bottled or filtered water varies. Depending on the mineral content of the water, calcium deposits or scale may build up in your Brewer. Scale is non-toxic but left unattended, it can hinder Brewer performance. Descaling your Brewer helps maintain the heating element, and other internal parts of the Brewer that come in contact with water.

The Brewer should be de-scaled every 3-6 months to ensure optimal performance or when there are white deposits in the Water Reservoir. It is possible for calcium deposits to build up faster, making it necessary to de-scale more often.

Step 1: Make sure you have at least 8 ounces of undiluted white vinegar on hand. You will also need a 10 oz ceramic mug (do not use a paper cup) and access to a sink.

Step 2: Fill Water Reservoir with 8 ounces of undiluted white vinegar up to the FILL LEVEL mark, place a ceramic mug on the Drip Tray Plate.

Step 3: Close the lid, and perform a brew into the ceramic mug without adding a K-Cup® Pack.

Step 4: Pour the contents of the ceramic mug into the Water Reservoir, careful the liquid will be hot, close the lid. Start a brew but power off the Brewer just after it starts to dispense and then allow it to sit for at least 30 minutes.

Step 5: After the prescribed period of time, perform a brew without adding a K-Cup® Pack. Empty the contents of the ceramic mug into the sink, be careful as contents may be hot.

Step 6: Fill the Water Reservoir with 8 ounces of bottled water, close the water fill lid, place a cup on the Drip Tray Plate and perform a brew.

Step 7: Repeat Step 6 three times using bottled water (with no K-Cup® Pack in place) to cleanse the Brewer plumbing and get rid of any residual taste from the vinegar. The Brewer is now ready for normal use again.

TROUBLESHOOTING YOUR SINGLE SERVE 1.0

  6. Pour coffee grounds into the reusable coffee filter . Tip: ensure grounds to not spill into the water reservoir when filling the coffee filter. Removing the coffee filter to fill with grounds can help prevent accidental spills into the reservoir.
  7. Close the lid. Note: if you prefer bolder hot coffee, you can use an extra ½ – 1 scoop of coffee grounds
  8. Place the mug that was used to measure water under the drip spout . Press the “HOT BREW” button.
  9. Add in your favorite coffee mix-ins for coffee just how you like it. Enjoy!

FAQ

Why does the ICED coffee still brew HOT?
The Mr. Coffee Frappe™+ Coffeemaker brews the perfect ratio of hot, concentrated coffee over ice to create flavorful frozen and iced coffee! This process maximizes flavor extraction and leaves you with a refreshing cup of iced coffee every time. Our precise measurements of water, coffee grounds and ice ensure that your iced coffee is always flavorful and never watered down.
My frappe didn’t blend properly, what’s wrong?
Sorry about this! There could be a few causes for this:

  1. There might be too much ice. Only add ice to the line on the blender jar. When using smaller-sized ice cubes, you may need to use slightly less ice.
  2. There might not be enough liquid. Ensure that water is filled to the water line before pouring into the reservoir or try adding more milk to improve consistency.
  3. There might not be any sugar to help consistency while blending. We have found that syrup or sugar of some form greatly helps blend texture and consistency. Try one of our favorite recipes in the included recipe book!

The “BLEND” button didn’t blend my frappe all the way, what should I do?If you desire additional blending, simply press the “PULSE” button a few times and the blender will pulse as you hold down the button.

My iced or hot coffee isn’t strong enough for my taste – what now?
No problem – everyone’s tastes are different! Try adding an extra ½ – 1 scoop of coffee grounds to the reusable filter for a bolder cup of coffee.

Is the tumbler dishwasher safe?
No, the tumbler, lid and straw should be hand-washed only.

Why is there no ice left in my cup after brewing iced coffee?
Try using bigger ice cubes when making your iced coffee – these will melt slower and give you ice in your drink for longer! Also be sure you have filled your tumbler all the way to the “ICE” marking.

Why are there coffee grounds in my coffee?
You may have over-filled your reusable coffee filter with coffee grounds, and they could have spilled over the top. Although this is uncommon, try using a little less grounds next time and that should solve this problem!

Can I use a different tumbler or cup for making iced coffee?
Sure thing! Just ensure you keep the same ratio of water-ground-ice to create the best tasting iced coffee!

CAUTION: PRESSURE
In order to avoid possible burns to body parts and/or another injury from hot steam and water or damages to the unit, never remove the water reservoir, milk reservoir or the porta-filter while your MR. COFFEE® Café Barista (espresso, cappuccino and latte maker) is brewing coffee or frothing. Wait until the brew cycle is complete before removing any of these parts. If coffee does not drip, the filter is blocked. Turn off the appliance and allow it to cool down. The blockage may be caused by the coffee being too finely ground. See the “TROUBLESHOOTING” section.

CORRECT USE OF GROUND COFFEE FOR ESPRESSO MAKERS
Do not use sugar roasted* ground coffee or sugar-roasted coffee beans as these will clog the filter and damage the appliance. If sugar-roasted coffee is accidentally used, stop using the unit and bring it to the closest service center for maintenance. We recommend descaling the machine periodically to keep it in good working condition. Contact us toll-free at the Consumer Service Department, 1-800-MR COFFEE (1-800-672-6333) to learn about this process.

INTRODUCTION

Congratulations! You have selected the new and innovative Mr. Coffee® Café Barista (espresso, cappuccino & latte maker). This unique appliance has been designed to help you prepare delicious espressos, cappuccinos and lattes quickly, conveniently, and automatically with the touch of a button.

FOR BEST BREW
When using appliance, be sure to use espresso grounds. If grinding beans, be sure to purchase espresso beans.

ESPRESSO
A unique method of coffee brewing in which hot water is forced through finely ground coffee. Popular in Europe, it is a far richer and more full-bodied brew than regular drip coffee. Because of its richness, espresso is usually served in 44 to 59 mL (1.5 to 2 oz.) portions, in demitasse cups.

CAPPUCCINO
A drink made with about 1/3 espresso, 1/3 steamed milk, and 1/3 frothed milk.

LATTE
A drink made with about 1/4 espresso and 3/4 steamed milk. Please read ALL of the instructions, cautions, notes and warnings included in this instruction manual carefully before you begin to use this appliance. When this unit is used, some parts and accessories get hot and need to cool down. Proper care and maintenance will ensure the long life of the MR. COFFEE® Café Barista and its trouble-free operation. HOW TO SELECT THE RIGHT CUP
Please make sure to select your cup according to the following chart:

NOTE: The total amount of the beverage can vary depending on the type of milk used and Froth Control Knob setting.

SELECTING THE RIGHT COFFEE

THE COFFEE
The coffee should be freshly ground and dark roasted. You may want to try a French or Italian roast ground for espresso. Pre-ground coffee will only retain its flavor for 7 – 8 days, provided it is stored in an airtight container and in a cool, dark area. Do not store in a refrigerator or freezer. Whole beans are recommended to be ground just before use. Coffee beans stored in an airtight container will keep its flavor for up to 4 weeks.

THE GRIND
This is a vital step in the espresso making process if you are grinding your own coffee and takes practice. The coffee must be of a fine grind.

  • The correct grind should look like salt.
  • If the grind is too fine, the water will not flow through the coffee even under pressure. These grinds look like powder and feel like flour when rubbed between fingers.
  • If the grind is too coarse, the water flows through the coffee too fast, preventing a full-flavored extraction.

Be sure to use a quality grinder for uniform consistency. A conical or burr mill grinder is recommended for a consistent and fine espresso grind.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

IMPORTANT: Unit must be primed prior to first use. See page 8.

FILLING THE WATER RESERVOIR

  • Lift the removable water reservoir from the unit and fill with fresh water up to the “MAX” line. Do not fill past the “MAX” line. Never use warm or hot water to fill the water reservoir.
  • Close the water reservoir lid and place it back in the unit ensuring it fits tightly.

FILLING THE MILK RESERVOIR
If you plan to prepare cappuccino or latte, remove the milk reservoir from the unit. Lift the lid and pour the quantity of cold milk you estimate you will need. Do not fill past the MAX Figure 2 line. When done, place the milk reservoir back in the unit ensuring it fits tightly and the Cappuccino and Latte buttons are illuminated or pulsing.

NOTE: Be sure to firmly push Milk Reservoir into unit until Cappuccino and Latte buttons light illuminate/pulse.

NOTE: You can use any type of milk, i.e. whole milk, low fat milk, organic or soy milk.

CHOOSING THE FILTER
Select the filter to be used as follows:

  • FOR A SINGLE SHOT – use the filter for a single shot of espresso if using ground coffee.
  • FOR A DOUBLE SHOT OR TWO SINGLE SHOTS – use filter for a double shot.

INSERTING THE FILTER

  • To insert the selected filter in the porta-filter, make sure to align the notch on the filter with the groove inside the porta filter.
  • Turn the filter to the left or right to lock in place. This will help secure the filter in the porta filter.

NOTE: To remove and clean the filter, turn filter to the left or right to align the filter notch with the groove inside the porta-filter.

WARNING: Make sure the filter has cooled before attempting to remove the filter.

FILLING WITH COFFEE

  • Fill the filter with fresh, fine ground espresso coffee (do not overfill).
  • Tamp and compress the ground coffee firmly and evenly. Coffee should be 1/8-inch below top of filter after tamping.
  • Clean any excess coffee from the rim to ensure proper fit under brew head and avoid leaks.

PLACING THE PORTA-FILTER

  • Position porta-filter underneath the brew head, attach porta-filter by first moving retainer clip back.
  • Position handle so that the handle lines up with the open lock icon “ ” on the unit and fits into the groove.
  • Then, slowly turn it to the right until the retention clip is aligned with the closed lock symbol “ ” on the unit.

PLACING THE CUP(S)

  • Pull out the height adjustment tray if you are using a small “demitasse” cup to brew espresso.
  • Keep the height adjustment tray inside its compartment if you are using a larger cup to brew cappuccino.
  • Keep the height adjustment tray inside its compartment if you are brewing into a larger cup.
CAUTION: When brewing cappuccino or latte, make sure to adjust the frothing tube lever to aim the frothed milk dispensing tube inside your cup.

TURNING THE UNIT ON

  • Make sure unit is plugged in.
  •  Turn unit on “I”.

The 3 control panel lights will start pulsing during heating until the brew and steam heaters reach the perfect temperature. Once these lights become solid, the unit is ready to use.
NOTE: It is normal for the Espresso function to be ready before the Cappuccino and Latte functions.
NOTE: If you leave your unit on for 15 minutes without using, your unit will go into sleep mode. Press any button to reactivate.

CLEANING THE WATER RESERVOIR
Discard the remaining water by removing the reservoir and turning it upside down over the sink. It is recommended to empty the water reservoir between uses. Wash the water reservoir with soapy water, rinse it well and wipe it dry. Do not wash the water reservoir in the dishwasher.

CLEANING THE UNIT

  1. Wipe housing with a soft wet cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or scouring pads, as they will scratch the finish.
  2. Do not store the porta-filter in the brew head. This can adversely affect the seal between the brew head and the porta-filter while brewing espresso.
CAUTION: Do not immerse appliance in water.

DELIMING
Mineral deposits built-up in the unit will affect the operation of the appliance. Your appliance must be delimed when you begin to notice an increase in the time required to brew espresso, or when there is excessive steaming. Also, you may notice a build-up of white deposits on the surface of the brew head. The frequency of cleaning depends upon the hardness of the water used. The following table gives the suggested cleaning intervals.

SUGGESTED CLEANING INTERVALS

Type of Water Cleaning Frequency
Soft Water (Filtered Water) Every 80 Brew Cycles
Hard Water (Tap Water) Every 40 Brew Cycles
