KEY FEATURES OF THE WHEELCHAIR

Do you want to know the key parts of our wheelchair? Knowing about the key features of this wheelchair is important as it will help you to understand the anatomy of it or help when you are planning to replace its parts or planning to repair it at home.

Push Handle

Located on the back of the wheelchair, the push handles help to push the chair. We have installed rubber handles to make it more comfortable to push the wheelchair.

Wheels

There are three types of wheels front casters, pneumatic wheels and hand rims. The hand rims are used for manual propulsion of the wheelchair. While front castors (mag wheels) are small size, heavy and durable wheels.

Brakes

The brakes are located on the front side of pneumatic wheels next to the bottom of the seat. Breaks lock the wheels to prevent the wheelchair from moving.

Footplates

There are two movable foot plates to provide support surface on the top of where the user’s foot is resting.

Footplates Hangers

The components connect foot plates to the frame. They allow the foot plates to be adjusted according to user’s comfort level.

Leg Support

It eliminates road shock and makes rides smoother.

Seat Cushion

Extra-Seat cushion can be placed on the place where users sit down to make a comfortable sitting.

Backseat

The backseat is the fixed area that supports the user’s back to rest on.

GETTING STARTED WITH THE WHEELCHAIR

Our wheelchair is lightweight (15.86 kg) and comes fully assembled. All you need to do is:

  • Take the wheelchair out of the package.
  • Unfold it and hook on few attachments without using any special tool.
  • Sit on-top of your wheelchair seat and it is ready to roll.

However to get started with the wheelchair safely, you must check about the seat depth, back height, rear seat to door, wheel camber, seat width etc. Depending on body size, you might need to make little adjustments.

Seat Depth (43 cm)
It is measured from the most posterior point of the body to the inside of the knee. Some prefer more leg overhang to make room for their hand when lifting their leg.

Back Height (40 cm)
It is measured from the seat base to the top of the chair back. It affects freedom for the upper body to rotate.

Seat Width (44cm)
It is the widest point of the body from knee to hip. 44 cm offers enough space to move freely. It also makes you comfortable even when you are wearing heavy winter clothing.

How To Fold And Unfold The Wheelchair With Fixed Backrest

Stand behind the wheelchair and pull it outwards to open up the chair.
Next, press the seat down to open it.

CAUTION: Do not place your hand or finger at the seal pipe or beneath the seat.

Adjusting The Height Of The Foot Plate

  1. Turn the foot plate in the direction of the arrow, and adjust its height. Then tighten the nut at the side of the step pipe with the spanner provided.
  2. Using the spanner, slightly loosen the portion of the step pipe where it is bolted to the foot plate.
  3. Turn the foot plate in the direction of the arrow. Then fix the foot plate.

CAUTION:

  1. Flip the foot plate up whenever getting on or off the wheelchair.
  2. Ensure that foot plate is at least 7 cm above the ground. If placed too low. The foot plate will hit obstacles when travelling on uneven ground, causing the wheelchair to be off-balance.

Instructions for Caregivers

  • Set the patient in a vertical posture in the chair. (Please don’t forget to lock the chair’s wheel when you are transferring the patient to and from the wheelchair).
  • The footrests should be folded to the side to ensure the safety of the patient when he is getting into the wheelchair.
  • After the setting of the patient, shift the footrests back to the position and be sure that they are fine-tuned to the appropriate place for the patient.
  • Hold on to grips on the back of the wheelchair firmly for pushing or pulling it in the proposed route. (Must tell the patient you are going to be moving the chair).
  • Always control speed according to the patient comfort as speed could be unpleasant for the patient.
  • Avoid trying new moves if you are maneuvering the wheelchair for the very first time.

Instructions for Users

  • Always place youself in a good and erect position in the wheelchair.
  • Your feet should be placed ahead of you in the footrests.
  • Hold the wheels of the chair with your hands before moving your wheelchair on your own.
  • Reduce speed whenever you need to change the direction.
  • Don’t try to force your wheelchair up any kind of slope like hills or ramps.
  • Also, refrain from moving up or down curbs unassisted, whenever possible.

Negotiating Kerbs

  • Practice with an empty wheelchair pushing and pulling a wheelchair down/up a kerb.
  • Don’t forget to inform user about about what you intend to do.
  • The chair must be lined up at 90° to the kerb.
  • It is safer to go down a kerb backwards. It requires less strength and gives a gentler ride.
  • Slowly roll the rear wheels down from the kerb so that both wheels touch the road at the same time.
  • When the occupant’s feet are clear of the kerb, gently lower the front to the road.
  • When the front casters are just clear of the kerb, push the wheelchair forwards until the casters rest on the pavement.
  • Do not tip the wheelchair back more than necessary.

It is always best to avoid kerbs. If a kerb is unavoidable then the above shared precautions should be taken for a safe journey.

TRANSPORTATION OF WHEELCHAIR IN A CAR

You can place it to the car boot with folding armrests, footrests and other parts. For safe and easy stowing of the chair, you need to grip convenient fixed parts of the chair, and lift keeping the back straight, bending from the hips and knees. In case of any doubt about lifting and handling the weight of the chair, assistance should be sought from others.

  • Adjust the wheelchair including footrest and armrest properly before getting in or up from the chair.
  • Ensure that the brake is locked when getting on/off the wheelchair.
  • Do remember to engage the brake even when stopping for a short while. Make it a habit to engage brakes.
  • Always lock the brakes of the wheels when not in use or getting off from the chair.
  • Do not step on the foot plate when getting off the wheelchair, or else the chair will tilt forward. If needed, adjust or lift foot rests and arm rests for transferring safely.

  • Avoid forcing your chair down or up staircases, slopes and inclines.
  • The wheelchair is designed to operate on a pathway which is clear of all obstacles. So, don’t force your way through stairways, rough terrain, sloppy pathways, and other rough surfaces.
  • To move up a step, the care giver who is pushing the wheelchair must step on the tipping bar and push downwards at the handle, such that the front wheel castors are raised onto the step. Next, pull upwards at the handles to bring up the rear wheels. Do not try to push over the steps by force.
  • To move up or down a steep slope, ensure that a care giver is around to support the wheelchair; otherwise, the chair may overturn. For a steep downward slope. The wheelchair should be turned to face up slope, and the care giver should back the chair downwards gradually.
  • When turning at a sharp corner, reduce speed to avoid tipping over.
  • When lifting a wheelchair with the patient on it, do not hold on to the handles if the chair’s backrest is the foldable kind, otherwise the back rest may be damaged.

  • You can attach flashy items on your wheelchair when you go out at night so that people can easily see you in dark streets or other places.

GENERAL CARE AND MAINTENANCE OF WHEELCHAIR

A regular maintenance is important to maximize durability of the wheelchair. It also ensures the proper functionality of the chair for a long time.

Cleaning

To maintain Dr Trust Wheelchair appearance and a prolonged life lspan, it should be cleaned properly. Greasy or fatty substances can reduce the service life of the chair so, it is important to clean it properly on a regular basis. Moreover the fabric used on the chair is easy to clean. Add a small amount of washing power in warm water and apply it on the fabric with a cloth. Rinse off it with clean water and leave it to dry. Antiseptic solutions can also be applied to the fabric.

Removing Stains

Although the wheelchair is resistant to most of mild chemicals and household stains but if something is absorbed by it that may cause a permanent stain, can be extinguished by cleaning it with a soapy sponge.

CAUTIONS: Do not use harsh chemicals such as bleaching powder, wax polish, abrasive cleaner etc as the use of any of these material could harm PVC laminates and subsequently lead to cracks on the surface of chair.

WHEELCHAIR TROUBLESHOOTING

Below are some general guidelines for wheelchair troubleshooting.

  • It is a folding frame wheelchair, so the folding mechanism should be checked regularly for easiness of use. If you find any stiffness, apply small amount of silicon spray to alleviate it.
  • If folding the wheelchair becomes difficult, the frame may be bent and you will need to check it.
  • If the chair is veering to one direction, it means there is some issue in its parts alignment, these parts need to be adjusted straightaway for making seating comfortable.
  • If you diagnose toe-in or toe-out issue (difference in the distance between the both front and back wheels’ levels of the axles), adjustments need to be done. Usually this can be achieved by using washers to space the axle block, either at the front or the back, whichever is appropriate. Sometimes, adjustment of toe-in or toe-out can be done by rotating of the axle bar.
  • If the wheels do not spin well, there could be the bearings problem. It may be loose or worn and you need to review all wheels on weekly basis.
  • If you find excessive sideways movement of the wheels, it could be because of loosening of the nuts holding the axle. They should be checked and tightened properly if required.
  • If there is excessive grinding noise and sideways movement, it may be because of worn bearing. You need to replace this part with the help of a qualified professional.
  • Check and tight the nuts on the stem bolt or caster fork to restrict the free movement of the caster.
  • If it is harder to push and turn the wheelchair, check its tyres’ pressure. Always keep them inflated to maintain the standard pressure level as over inflated tyre can also cause a problem.
  • Replace worn tyre immediately as it may result in poor traction and also affect the efficiency of brakes.
  • Eradicate malfunctions related to brakes and all other safety features by your own or with the help of a professional.

CAUTIONS:

  • Users should not attempt major repairs or modifications.
  • Approved Distributors have full Service Information and are able to advise if the chair becomes damaged, requiring major part replacement, or refitting.
  • If you have any doubt about service requirements, contact to the Customer Support Department of Dr Trust.
  • Frequency of distributor service maintenance depends on usage level.
