Icon Text Description
CPAP C-Check Auto Bi-Level AutoB Mode This screen displays the therapy mode setting. Depending on the therapy device model, you can select CPAP mode, CPAP- Check (C-Check) mode, Auto-CPAP (Auto) mode, Bi-Level mode, or Auto Bi-Level (AutoB) mode. Note: CPAP-Check mode (C-Check) delivers CPAP therapy while automatically adjusting the pressure level to meet patient needs over the long term. Every 30 hours of therapy use, the therapy device evaluates the patient obstructive respiratory disturbance index  (ORDI) and increments pressure ± 1 cm H2O if needed. The range of adjustments that can be made over time is limited to  ± 3 cm H2 O of the CPAPCheck pressure setting, in 1 cm H2O increments.
Opti-Start Opti-Start This feature starts an Auto-CPAP therapy session at a tarting pressure that is closer to the previous session’s 90%  pressure, in order to reduce the likelihood of any residual events at the beginning of a therapy session. You can enable or disable this feature.
EZ-Start EZ-Start This feature reduces the therapy pressure setting for the first few days of operation and gradually increases this setting until the prescription therapy pressure is reached. For fixed CPAP mode, the initial pressure will be reduced to half of the prescription CPAP pressure setting, but no lower than 5 cm H2O. For Auto CPAP mode, EZ-Start reduces the maximum Auto pressure to 1cm H2O above the minimum Auto pressure setting.  For either model, after each day of successful use the therapy session was greater than 4 hours), the therapy pressure will increase by 1 cm H2O until the prescription pressure is reached.  From that point forward, the therapy device would operate in normal  CPAP, CPAP-Check, or Auto CPAP mode. If the patient has not reached their prescription pressure after 30 days of EZ-Start, then the therapy pressure will increase by 1 cm H2O per day until the prescription pressure is reached. You can enable or disable EZ-Start only if CPAP, CPAP-Check, or Auto CPAP mode is enabled.
A-TRIAL A-Trial This Auto-Trial feature will enable the device to deliver Auto-CPAP therapy for a selectable number of days of patient use. You can enable or disable this feature.
AUTO
A-Trial Days This screen allows you to adjust the duration of the Auto-Trial feature in a number of days. You can set this from 3 to 30 days. The default is 7  days. If a heated tube is attached to the device, then the device will automatically switch to Heated Tube Humidification  Mode. The fixed mode applies constant heat to the humidifier heater plate. Under certain conditions and settings, this mode can allow condensation to occur in the tube. Adaptive mode adapts the heater plate temperature to the ambient conditions in the room and is designed to not allow condensation to occur in the tube.
Humidifier This setting allows you to choose the desired humidity setting for the humidifier: 0, 1,2, 3, 4, or 5.
Tube Temperature This setting allows you to choose the desired temperature for the heated tube: 0, 1,2, 3, 4, or 5.
SMART
SmartRamp When SmartRamp mode is enabled, the therapy device’s ramp function utilizes an Auto titrating algorithm during the ramp period.  It allows patients the ability to stay at lower pressures during the ramp period, to improve their acclimation to therapy. SmartRamp mode functions differently, depending on the therapy mode that the device is using. *In CPAP or CPAP-Check mode, the SmartRamp applies the Auto-CPAP algorithm during the ramp period. The  Ramp Start pressure becomes the Auto Minimum pressure during the ramp period. The Auto Maximum pressure during ramp is the  CPAP or CPAP-Check pressure. *In Auto mode, the SmartRamp applies the Auto-CPAP algorithm during the ramp period. The Ramp  Start pressure becomes the Auto Minimum pressure during the ramp period. The Auto Maximum pressure during ramp is the Auto  Minimum under normal Auto mode.

*In BiPAP or Auto-BiPAP mode, the SmartRamp applies the modified version of the Auto-BiPAP algorithm during the ramp period. The Ramp Start pressure becomes the EPAP Minimum pressure, and the Pressure Support Minimum pressured is applied.

The IPAP Maximum pressure during ramp is the EPAP or EPAP  Minimum under normal BiPAP or Auto-BiPAP mode.

The SmartRamp period will terminate in either of two ways:

1) If SmartRamp pressure reaches the minimum pressure of the therapy mode selected, then SmartRamp ends, and the device  continues to deliver therapy under the selected therapy mode, or:

2) If SmartRamp pressure does not reach the minimum pressure of the therapy mode selected by the end of the Ramp Time, then pressure is increased at a rate of approximately 1 cm H2O per minute. Once the pressure reaches the minimum pressure of the therapy mode selected, then the device will continue to deliver therapy for that mode. If SmartRamp mode is not enabled, then the standard, linear pressure ramp mode is active.

Ramp Time When you set the Ramp time, the device increases the therapy pressure from the value set on the Ramp start screen to the therapy pressure setting over the length of time specified here. If the therapy pressure is set to 4 cm H2 O (the minimum setting),  this screen will not display. Note: Depending on the therapy mode,  the therapy pressure setting could be CPAP pressure, CPAP-Check pressure, Auto min pressure, EPAP pressure, or EPAP min pressure. Note: If the Ramp time is set to 0, Ramp start will not display.
Ramp Start This displays the Ramp starting pressure. You can increase or decrease the Ramp starting pressure in 0.5 cm H2O increments.  This is only available if Ramp time has been set to >0 and therapy pressure >4 cm H2O. Note: Depending on the therapy mode, the therapy pressure setting could be CPAP pressure, CPAP-Check pressure, Auto min pressure, EPAP pressure, or EPAP min pressure.
FLEX Flex This screen displays the comfort mode setting. You can select OFF, C-Flex, or C-Flex+ (if in CPAP or CPAP-Check mode). You can select  OFF, C-Flex, or A-Flex (if in Auto-CPAP or Auto-Trial mode).
FLEX Flex Setting You can modify the Flex setting (1, 2, or 3) on this screen if you enabled Flex. The setting of “1” provides a small amount of pressure relief, with higher numbers providing additional relief.
Rise Time Rise time is the time it takes for the device to change from EPAP to IPAP. This screen allows you to adjust the rise time so you can find the desired setting. This is only available if Flex has been disabled and the device is in Bi-level or Auto Bi-level mode.
• 0 (off) reduces the Rise Time feature to the lowest setting (off = 150 msec).

Performance Check troubleshooting tool is a self-diagnostic utility built into the therapy device. It allows you to quickly evaluate a therapy device remotely. If a  patient calls indicating that their therapy does not seem to be operating properly, just direct them to click on Performance Check in the patient’s My Provider menu. The check operates the blower and screens the device for any operating errors. The screen then displays whether the device passed the check (displays a  green check mark) or should be returned for service (displays a red X). If a modem is installed, Performance Check will automatically upload a troubleshooting dashboard to the Encore Anywhere patient management software. This dashboard gives you an overview of key device settings and statistics to help make troubleshooting over the phone easier. If there is not a modem installed in the therapy device, you can direct the patient to read you the five codes off the  Performance Check screen over the phone. You can decode these codes in EncoreAnywhere, EncorePro or Encore Basic to populate the troubleshooting dashboard.

Demonstration Mode

Demonstration mode allows you to demonstrate different device settings while the blower is on so that the patient can feel the changes in pressure based on the changes to the device settings. Note: Entering the Demonstration menu will disable the 5-minute Provider mode timeout.
While in Demonstration mode, compliance data is not logged, pressing Ramp has no effect, the humidifier will operate with its current settings, which cannot be adjusted during Demonstration mode, and setting adjustments have no effect on the existing prescription settings in the Provider menu. To exit Demonstration mode, press the therapy button. Then, you will be returned to the full Provider menu.

Event Definitions

The DreamStation monitors breathing and detects apneas and hypopneas.

Event Definition
Obstructed Airway Apnea / Clear Airway Apnea Detection An apnea is detected when there is an 80% reduction in airflow from baseline for at least 10 seconds or if there is no airflow detected for 10 seconds.
During the apnea, one or more pressure test pulses are delivered by the device. The device evaluates the response of the patient to the test pulse(s) and assesses whether the apnea has occurred while the patient has a clear airway or an obstructed airway. The airway is determined to be clear if the pressure test pulse generates a significant amount of flow; otherwise the airway is determined to be obstructed.
RERA Detection RERA (Respiratory effort-related arousal) is defined as an arousal from sleep that follows a 10 second or longer sequence of breaths that are characterized by increasing respiratory effort, but which does not meet criteria for an apnea or hypopnea. Snoring, though usually associated with this condition need not be present. The RERA algorithm monitors for a sequence of breaths that exhibit both a subtle reduction in airflow and progressive flow limitation. If this breath sequence is terminated by a sudden increase in airflow along with the absence of flow limitation, and the event does not meet the conditions for an apnea or hypopnea, a RERA is indicated.
Periodic Breathing A persistent waning and waxing breathing pattern which repeats itself between 30 and 100 seconds. The nadir of the breathing pattern is characterized by at least a 40% reduction in airflow from an established baseline flow. The pattern must be present for several minutes before it can be identified as periodic breathing.
No therapy adjustments are made in response to periodic breathing.
Flow Limitation Detection The device looks for relative changes in the peak, flatness, roundness, or shape (skewness) of the inspiratory portion of the airflow waveform. These changes are observed both over a short period of time (groups of 4 breaths) and over a long period of time (several minutes). Statistical measures are used to help minimize false event detection while allowing the device to be sensitive to even small changes.
Hypopnea Detection A hypopnea is detected when there is an approximately 40% reduction in airflow from baseline for at least 10 seconds.
Snore Detection Vibratory snore is detected when a specific frequency is detected during the inspiratory portion of the patient’s breath.Vibratory snore is disabled at pressures greater than 16 cm H20.

Cleaning for Multiple Users

Warning: If you are using the device on multiple users, discard and replace the bacteria filter each time the device is used on a different person.
Warning: Nebulization or humidification can increase the resistance of breathing system filters and the operator must monitor the breathing system filter frequently for increased resistance and blockage to ensure the delivery of the therapeutic pressure.
Note: When using the device on multiple users, it is recommended to use the “Reset Data” option before each new user. Refer to Reset Data under Device Settings of this guide for additional information.

If you are using the device on multiple users, complete the following steps to clean the device before each new user.
1. Before cleaning, unplug the device. Also remove the blue pollen filter and light-blue disposable ultra-fine filter (if using).
2. Clean the outside of the device only. Use a cloth with one of the following cleaning agents to clean the exterior of the device:
• Mild Detergent
• 70% Isopropyl Alcohol
• DisCide Towelettes
• 10% Chlorine Bleach solution
3. Allow the device to dry completely before plugging in the power cord and re-inserting the filter(s).
Note: Refer to the DreamStation Heated Humidifier user manual for cleaning the humidifier for multiple users.

Programming Your Remote

Your remote is designed to control multiple audio/video devices. To use, you will need to program the remote for your devices. There are two different methods you can use to program the remote, Direct Code Entry or Auto Code Search.

  • The Direct Code Entry method is the recommended method as it is the simplest and quickest method in most cases.
  • The Auto Code Search method searches through all the codes in the remote to find a code for your device.

NOTE: This remote comes preprogrammed for Roku® boxes and Samsung TVs. Press TV for Samsung TVs and STR for Roku boxes.

Direct Code Entry (Recommended)

  1. Locate the Code List included with your remote. Find the section for the type of device you wish to control, (for example TV, STR, AUD). Locate the brand of your device and circle all the remote codes for the brand.
  2. Press and hold down the SETUP button on the remote until the red light on the remote control turns on. Release the SETUP button. The red light will remain on.

NOTE: The red light will either be a small light at the top of the remote or the power ON/OFF button.

  1. Press and release the device button on the remote for the type of device you wish to control, (for example TV, STR, AUD). The red light will blink once and remain on.

NOTE: Any of the device buttons on the remote can be programmed to control any of your devices.
For example, you can use the aux device button on the remote to control a Satellite Receiver, Digital Converter Box, Streaming Media Player or any device category in the Code List.

  1. Use the number buttons on the remote to enter the first 4-digit remote code you circled in the Code List in Step 1. The red light will turn off after entering the fourth digit.
  2. Point the remote at the device. Test the buttons on the remote to see if the device responds as you would expect. If the buttons do not operate the device, return to Step 2 above and use the next code that you circled for that device.
  3. Repeat steps 1 – 5 for each device you wish to control.

Programming Notes

  • Some codes may operate only a few functions of your device. There may be another code in the Code List that controls more functions. Test other codes in the Code List for more functionality.
  • If you do not find a remote code that works your device or there are no codes in the Code List for your device, use the Auto Code Search method in the next section to program your remote.
  • For combination devices such as a TV/DVD combo or TV/VCR combo, you may have to enter a code for each device.
  • Write down the remote codes used to program the remote for future reference.

Auto Code Search

The Auto Code Search is a process where you can search through all the codes stored in the remote to find a code for your device. It is recommended that you read through all the steps below to familiarize yourself with the Auto Code Search before starting the process.

  1. Manually turn on the device you wish to control.
NOTE: The Auto Code Search process cannot be used for devices without power ON/OFF capability. Use the Direct Code Entry method in these cases.
  2. Press and hold down the SETUP button on the remote until the red light on the remote control turns on. Release the SETUP button. The red light will remain on. NOTE: The red light will either be a small light at the top of the remote or the power ON/OFF button.
  3. Press and release the device button on the remote for the type of device you wish to control, (for example TV, STRM, AUX). The red light will blink once and remain on.
  4. With the remote pointed at the device, press and release the POWER button on the remote. The remote will send 10 different codes to the device. The red light will blink once for each code and remain on after sending the 10 codes.
    Did the device turn off?
If YES, go to Step 5.
If NO, repeat Step 4 to test the next 10 codes.
  5. Manually turn the device back on.
  6. With the remote pointed at the device, press and release the VOL button. The remote will re-send the first code of the 10 codes from Step 4. The red light will blink once and remain on.
    Did the device turn off?
If YES, you have found a code for the device. Press and release the same device button you pressed in Step 3. This will store the code in the remote. Go to Step 7.
If NO, continue to press and release the VOL button until the device turns off to test the other 9 codes from Step 4. Be sure to wait approximately 3 seconds after each VOL button press to allow the device time to respond to the code. When the device turns off, you have found a code for your device. Press and release the same device button pressed in Step 3. This will store the code in the remote. Go to Step 7.
    NOTE:
The VOL DOWN button can be used to go back through each batch of 10 codes.
The red indicator light will flash 2 times after testing the first or last code in each batch of 10.
  7. Use the remote to turn the device back on. Test the buttons on the remote to see if the device responds as you would expect. If the buttons do not operate the device, return to Step 2 and repeat this process to search for a better code to operate the device.
  8. Repeat this process for each device you wish to control.

Controlling Combo Devices

Some combo devices (e.g., TV/VCR, TV/DVD, DVD/VCR, etc.) will require you to set up two different device buttons to control both parts of the combo device. For example, if you have a TV/DVD combo, you may need to set up one code under the TV button to control the TV and a separate code under the DVD button to control the DVD.

Using Your Remote

PHILIPS

SCF330

Introduction

Congratulations on your purchase and welcome to Philips Avent! To fully benefit from the support that Philips Avent offers, register your product at www.philips.com/welcome.
The Philips Avent manual breast pump has a unique design that enables you to sit in a more comfortable position while expressing. The soft massage cushion* is designed to feel soft and warm and imitates your baby’s sucking action to provide fast milk flow – quietly, comfortably and gently. The pump is compact, easy to assemble and all parts are dishwasher-safe and BPA-free. Healthcare professionals say that breast milk is the best nutrition for babies during the first year, combined with solid food after the first 6 months. Your breast milk is specially adapted to your baby’s needs and contains antibodies which help protect your baby against infection and allergies. A breast pump can help you to breastfeed longer. You can express and store your milk so that your baby can still enjoy the benefits of it, even if you cannot be there to provide it yourself. As the pump is compact and discrete to use, you can take it with you anywhere, allowing you to express milk at your own convenience and maintain your milk supply.

*The massage cushion included with this pump was designed to comfortably fit the majority of mothers. However, should you need it, you can buy a massage cushion for larger nipples separately.

  • Wash, rinse and disinfect all pump parts before each use.
  • Do not use antibacterial or abrasive cleaning agents when you clean breast pump parts.
  • Do not continue pumping for more than five minutes at a time if you do not succeed in expressing any milk.
  • If the pressure generated is uncomfortable or causes pain, break the seal between the breast and the pump body with your finger and remove the pump from your breast.

Preparing for use

Clean and disinfect all parts of the breast pump before first use in the correct way (see ‘Cleaning and disinfection’). Clean all parts after each subsequent use and disinfect all parts before each subsequent use.

Assembling the breast pump

Note: Make sure you have cleaned and disinfected all parts of the breast pump. Wash your hands thoroughly before you handle cleaned parts.

Warning: Be careful, the cleaned parts may still be hot. Only start assembling the breast pump when cleaned parts have cooled down.

Tip: You may find it easier to assemble the breast pump while it is wet.

  1. Insert the white valve into the pump body from underneath. Push the valve in as far as possible (Fig. 2).
  2. Screw the pump body clockwise onto the bottle (Fig. 3) or storage cup (Fig. 4) until it is securely fixed.
Note: If you use a storage cup, you have to screw the adapter ring onto the storage cup first (Fig. 4).
  3. Insert the silicone diaphragm into the pump body from above. Make sure it fits securely around the rim by pressing down with your fingers to ensure a perfect seal (Fig. 5).
  4. Attach the handle onto the diaphragm with stem by hooking the hole in the handle over the end of the stem. Push down the handle onto the pump body until it clicks into place (Fig. 6).
  5. Place the massage cushion into the funnel-shaped section of the pump body (Fig. 7).
Push in the inner part of the massage cushion as far as possible and make sure that it is
perfectly sealed all around the rim of the pump body (Fig. 8). Press in between the petals
to remove any trapped air (Fig. 9).
Note: Place the cover over the massage cushion to keep the breast pump clean while you prepare for expressing.

Warning: Always use the breast pump with a massage cushion.

Using the breast pump

When to express milk

If breastfeeding goes well, it is advisable (unless advised otherwise by your healthcare professional/breastfeeding advisor) to wait until your milk supply and breastfeeding schedule are established (normally at least 2 to 4 weeks after giving birth) before you start expressing.

Exceptions:

  • If breastfeeding does not go well immediately, expressing regularly can help to establish and maintain your milk supply.
  • If you are expressing milk for your baby to be given in hospital.
  • If your breasts are engorged (painful or swollen), you can express a small amount of milk before or between feeds to ease the pain and to help your baby latch on more easily.
  • If you have sore or cracked nipples, you may wish to express your milk until they are healed.
  • If you are separated from your baby and wish to continue to breastfeed when you are reunited, you should express your milk regularly to stimulate your milk supply.

You need to find the optimum times of the day to express your milk, for example just before or after your baby’s first feed in the morning when your breasts are full, or after a feed if your baby has not emptied both breasts. If you have returned to work, you may need to express during a break. Using a breast pump requires practice and it may take several attempts before you succeed. Fortunately, the Philips Avent manual breast pump is easy to assemble and use so you will soon get used to expressing with it.

Tips

  • Familiarize yourself with the breast pump and how to operate it before you use it for the first time.
  • Choose a time when you are not in a rush and will not be interrupted.
  • A photograph of your baby can help encourage the ‘let-down’ reflex.
  • Warmth can also help: try to express after a bath or shower, or place a warm cloth or Philips Avent Thermopad on the breast for a few minutes before you start expressing.
  • You may find it easier to express while your baby is feeding from the other breast, or immediately after a feed.
  • If expressing becomes painful, stop and consult your breastfeeding advisor or healthcare professional.

Operating the breast pump

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly and make sure your breasts are clean.
  2. Relax in a comfortable chair (you may wish to use cushions to support your back). Make sure you have a glass of water nearby.
  3. Press the assembled pump body against your breast. Make sure that your nipple is centered, so that the massage cushion creates an airtight seal.
Note: Make sure that your nipple fits correctly in the massage cushion (Fig. 10). Not too tight, it is important that the nipple can move freely, while expressing breast milk (Fig. 11).
The massage cushion should not be too large, because this can cause pain or less effective expression (Fig. 12). If the cushion is not the right size for your nipples, you can purchase a cushion of a different size separately. Two cushion sizes are available: 19.5 mm and 25 mm.
You can find the size of the cushion (19.5 or 25 mm) on the cushion itself (Fig. 13).
  4. Gently start to press down the handle until you feel the suction on your breast (Fig. 14).
Then allow the handle to return to its resting position.
Note: You do not have to press down the handle fully, only as much as is comfortable.
Your milk will soon start flowing, even though you are not using all the suction the pump can generate.
  5. Repeat step 4 rapidly 5 or 6 times to initiate the ‘let-down’ reflex.
Warning: Do not continue pumping for more than five minutes at a time if you do not succeed in expressing any milk. Try to express at another time during the day.
  6. Adopt a slower rhythm by pressing down the handle and keeping it pressed down for up to 3 seconds before you let it return to its resting position. Continue in this way while your milk is flowing. If your hand becomes tired, try to use the other hand to operate the breast pump or rest your arm across your body to pump from the opposite breast.
Note: Do not worry if your milk does not flow immediately. Relax and continue pumping.
Repositioning the breast pump on your breast from time to time can help stimulate milk flow.
  7. On average, you need to pump for 10 minutes to express 60-125 ml (2-4 fl oz) of breast milk
from one breast. However, this is just an indication and varies from woman to woman.
  8. When you have finished expressing, carefully remove the breast pump from your breast and unscrew the bottle or storage cup from the pump body, ready for feeding or storage.
Clean the other used parts of the breast pump.
Note: If you regularly express more than 125 ml per session, you can purchase and use a 260 ml (9 fl oz) Philips Avent bottle to prevent overfilling and spillage.

After use

Storing breast milk

Warning: Only store breast milk collected with a clean and disinfected pump.
Breast milk can be stored in the fridge (not in the door) for up to 48 hours. Expressed milk should be refrigerated immediately. If you store milk in the fridge to add to during the day, only add milk that has been expressed into a clean and disinfected bottle or breast milk container.
Breast milk can be stored in the freezer for up to three months as long as it is kept in either disinfected bottles fitted with a disinfected screw ring and sealing disc or in disinfected storage cups with a disinfected lid. Clearly label the bottle or storage cup with the date and time of expression and use older breast milk first.

If you intend to feed your baby with the expressed breast milk within 48 hours, you can store the breast milk in the fridge in an assembled Philips Avent bottle or storage cup. Unscrew the bottle or storage cup and remove it from the pump body.

  1. Insert a disinfected sealing disc into a disinfected screw ring and screw this onto the bottle (Fig. 15). Seal the teat with the cap.
  2. Assemble a disinfected teat and screw ring onto the bottle (Fig. 16) or storage cup according to the separate instructions provided with the bottle or storage cup and seal the teat with the cap.
  3. In case a storage cup is included with the manual breast pump, screw the lid onto the storage  cup. Make sure you properly close it to avoid leakage (Fig. 17).

Do’s

  • Always refrigerate or freeze expressed milk immediately.
  • Only store milk collected with a cleaned and disinfected breast pump in cleaned bottles.

Don’ts

  • Never refreeze thawed breast milk.
  • Never add fresh breast milk to frozen breast milk.

Feeding your baby expressed breast milk

You can feed your baby with breast milk from Philips Avent bottles and storage cups:

  1. If you use frozen breast milk, let it defrost completely before you heat it.
Note: In case of an emergency, you can defrost the milk in a bowl of hot water.
  2. Heat the bottle or storage cup with defrosted or refrigerated breast milk in a bowl of hot water or in a bottle warmer.
  3. Remove the screw ring and sealing disc from the bottle or remove the lid from the storage cup.
  4. If you are using a storage cup, screw the adapter ring onto the cup.
  5. Screw a disinfected screw ring with disinfected teat onto the bottle or onto the storage cup with adapter ring.

Do’s

  • Always check the temperature of the milk before you feed it to your baby.
  •  Always discard any breast milk that is left over at the end of a feed.

Don’ts

  • Never heat milk in a microwave, as this can cause uneven heating, which can lead to hot spots in the milk. It may also destroy nutrients in the milk.
  • Never immerse a frozen storage cup in boiling water, as this may cause it to crack.
  • Never fill a storage cup with boiling water. Let the water cool down for 20 minutes before you pour it into the storage cup

Cleaning and disinfection

Caution: Wash your hands thoroughly before you touch disinfected items and make sure the surfaces on which you place disinfected items are clean.

Clean and disinfect all parts of the breast pump before first use. Clean all parts after each use and disinfect all parts before each subsequent use.

  1. Disassemble the breast pump completely. Also remove the white valve.
Caution: Be careful when you remove the white valve and when you clean it. If it gets damaged, your breast pump does not function properly. To remove the white valve, gently pull at the ribbed tab on the side of the valve.
  2. Clean all parts in hot water with some mild washing-up liquid and then rinse them thoroughly. You can also clean the parts in the dishwasher (on the top rack only). Do not put any other objects on top of them.
Note: To clean the valve, rub it gently between your fingers in warm water with some washing-up liquid. Do not insert objects into the valve, as this may cause damage.
  3. Disinfect all parts in a Philips Avent steam steriliser or by boiling them for 5 minutes. For boiling, fill a household pot with enough water to cover all parts. Bring the water to the boil.
Place the parts in the household pot and boil them for 5 minutes. During disinfection with boiling water, prevent the bottle or other parts from touching the side of the pan. This can cause irreversible product deformation or damage that Philips cannot be held liable for. Allow water to cool and gently remove the parts from the water. Place the parts neatly on a clean paper towel or in a clean drying rack and allow them to air-dry. Avoid using cloth towels to dry the parts because they can carry germs and bacteria that are harmful to your baby.

Note:

  • Do not use abrasive or antibacterial cleaning agents.
  • Excessive concentration of detergents may eventually cause plastic components to crack. Should this occur, replace immediately.
  • Food colorings may discolor parts.
  • Philips Avent storage cups and bottles are suitable for all methods of disinfection.

Storage

Keep the breast pump out of direct sunlight as prolonged exposure may cause discoloration. Store the breast pump and its accessories in a safe and dry place.

Compatibility

The Philips Avent manual breast pump is compatible with Philips Avent bottles in our range and Philips Avent storage cups. When you use other Philips Avent bottles, use the same type of teat that was supplied with that bottle. For details on how to assemble the teat and general cleaning instructions, see chapters ‘Feeding your baby expressed breast milk’ and ‘Cleaning and disinfection’.

  • Spare teats are available separately. Make sure you use a teat with the correct flow rate when you feed your baby.
  • Do not mix Philips Avent Anti-colic bottle parts and teats with parts of the Philips Avent Natural bottles. They may not fit and could cause leakage or other issues.
  • The high-quality plastic Philips Avent Natural bottle is compatible with most Philips Avent breast pumps, spouts, sealing discs and cup tops.

Using the bottle warmer

With this bottle warmer, you can safely warm all Philips Avent feeding bottles and milk/baby food in containers and other baby food jars.
Note: Philips Avent breast milk bags and Philips Avent 2oz/60ml bottles cannot be used in this bottle warmer.

Explanation of settings

  • Offsetting: The bottle warmer is switched off and the light is off. On every other setting, the appliance is switched on and the light is lit (Fig. 2).
  • Express milk warming setting for contents up to 180ml/6oz: Select this setting when you want to quickly warm a bottle of milk with a content up to 180ml/6oz. The bottle has to be taken out immediately after warming to the right temperature, otherwise, the milk will be overheated.
  • Food warming setting: Select this setting when you want to warm a container/jar of baby food.
  • Express milk warming setting for contents over and including 180ml/6oz: Select this setting when you want to quickly warm a bottle of milk with content over and including 180ml/6oz. The bottle needs to be taken out immediately after warming to the right temperature, otherwise, the milk will be overheated.
  • Keep warm setting: Milk is warmed at a slower speed and be kept at the right temperature.
  • Defrost setting: Defrost a bottle/container of milk/baby food to a liquid state. No warming occurs.

Using the bottle warmer with express milk warming setting

  1. Put the mains plug in the wall socket (Fig. 3).
  2. Place a bottle in the bottle warmer (Fig. 4).
  3. Fill the bottle warmer with drinking water up to the level of the milk in the bottle. In the case of large amounts of milk, the maximum level of water is approximately 1 cm below the top of the bottle warmer. An accurate water level ensures correct warming performance (Fig. 5).
  4. Select the desired setting based on the milk volume. See the express warming reference table at the end of this chapter to check how long the milk needs to be warmed in the selected setting (Fig. 6).
Note: The speed of warming milk depends on the amount of the milk warmed and on its initial temperature, i.e. room temperature (20°C) or fridge temperature (5°C).
  5. The orange light goes on when you select a setting. This indicates that the bottle warmer is on (Fig. 7).
Note: Whilst warming the milk circulates and heats evenly.
  6. Check the express warming reference table for the time required to warm the milk. Remove the bottle from the bottle warmer after the time indicated in the express warming reference table has passed (Fig. 8).
Tip: When you find the milk is not warm enough, you can place the bottle back into the appliance for a maximum of 30 seconds of extra warming. This will create a slightly warmer result but without overheating.
Caution: If you leave the bottle in the bottle warmer longer than the time indicated in the settings table, the milk may become overheated.
Note: If you overheat breast milk, valuable nutrients and vitamins may be lost.
  7. Always check the temperature before you feed your baby. Gently shake the bottle or milk storage container and check the temperature of the milk by sprinkling a few drops on the inside of your wrist (Fig. 9).
  8. Turn the knob back to the ‘off’ position (Fig. 10).
Caution: The water in the bottle warmer might be hot after finishing warming milk/baby food. Be careful that hot water can cause serious burns.
If you do not turn the knob back to the ‘off’ position, the water keeps heating up and will reach a very high temperature.
    Express warming reference table.

    ml/oz min 5°C/40°F min 20°C/70°F
    60 ml/2 oz-90 ml/3 oz 4.5 3.0
    90 ml/3 oz-110 ml/3.7 oz 5.5 3.0
    125 ml/4 oz-150 ml/5 oz 3.5 3.0
    180 ml/6 oz-210 ml/7 oz 5.5 4.0
    240 ml/8 oz-260 ml/9 oz 7.0 4.5
    290 ml/10 oz-330 ml/11 oz 7.5 5.0

Note: The indicated warming times are based on Philips Avent Classic and Natural PP bottle ranges. Be aware that warming timings of Philips Avent standard bottles and glass bottles deviate from these indications. The characteristics of bottles such as material or thickness may also impact the warming times, therefore it may take less time to warm a larger volume of milk.
Note: The milk may feel cool to you, but for a newborn baby its temperature is very pleasant.

Using the bottle warmer to warm baby food

  1. Follow the same steps as indicated in the previous paragraph.
  2. Make sure to stir the baby food during warming as it does not circulate automatically. Be careful not to burn your fingers when holding the container/jar while stirring (Fig.  11).
After warming test the baby food with a spoon to ensure it is not too hot. If the baby food is not warm enough, put the container back into the bottle warmer and warm the baby food until it has the desired temperature.
Note: Due to the high variety of baby food consistencies, it is strongly recommended to continuously stir and check while you are warming the baby food for an optimal result.
Note: Due to the high variety of baby food consistencies, it is not possible to indicate warming timings for baby food.
Using the keep warm setting to warm milk
  1. Put the mains plug in the wall socket (Fig. 3).
  2. Place the bottle or container in the bottle warmer (Fig. 4).
  3. Fill the bottle warmer with drinking water up to the level of the milk in the bottle/container. In the case of large amounts of milk, the maximum level of water is approximately  1 cm below the top of the bottle warmer (Fig. 5).
  4. Select the position of keeping warm (Fig. 6).
In this setting, you can warm your milk at a slow pace and keep it warm at the right end temperature. E.g. to warm a bottle of 4oz milk starting from room temperature, it will take 15-20min. The warming time may be longer or shorter depends on the milk volumes and starting temperature.
Note: Philips Avent recommends feeding your baby as soon as possible after the milk is warmed. We advise not to reheat the milk after it has cooled down again.
Note: Always check the temperature before you feed your baby (Fig. 9).
  5. Turn the knob back to the ‘off’ position when the bottle/ container is removed from the bottle warmer (Fig. 10).

Using the bottle warmer with defrost setting

  1. Put the mains plug in the wall socket (Fig. 3).
  2. Place the bottle or container in the bottle warmer (Fig. 4).
  3. Fill the bottle warmer with drinking water up to the level of the milk/baby food in the bottle/container. In the case of large amounts of milk/baby food, the maximum level of water is approximately 1 cm below the top of the bottle warmer (Fig. 5).
  4. Select the position of defrosting (Fig. 6).
At this setting, your frozen milk/baby food can be defrosted till liquid state.
For frozen milk, check the warming reference table for the expected defrost timings, as an indication one small and one larger milk volume are included in the table. After your milk is defrosted, choose express warming setting or keep warming setting to warm your milk. Please refer to the previous chapters for usage instructions. Consider the start temperature of your milk around fridge temperature for the warming timings as a rough guideline.

    ml/oz hours
    60 ml/2 oz-90 ml/3 oz 1-1.5
    180 ml/6 oz-210 ml/7 oz 1.5-2.5
  5. You may also defrost baby food in a Philips Avent food container by this setting. After your baby food is defrosted, choose a food warming setting to warm it.
Please refer to the previous chapter for usage instruction.
Note: Due to the high variety of baby food consistencies, it is strongly recommended to continuously stir and check while you are defrosting the baby food for an optimal result.
Note: Due to the high variety of baby food consistencies, it is not possible to indicate warming timings for baby food.

Cleaning and descaling

Cleaning

  1. After each use, unplug the bottle warmer and let it cool down (Fig. 12).
  2. Remove the water from the bottle warmer for hygienic reasons (Fig. 13).
  3. Wipe the outside and inside of the bottle warmer with a moist cloth (Fig. 14).
Do not use abrasive, anti-bacterial cleaning agents, chemical solvents or sharp tools to clean the bottle warmer.
Note: If you used the bottle warmer to warm containers with baby food, make sure that no spilled baby food remains on the bottom of the bottle warmer.

Descaling
It is recommended to descale the bottle warmer every four weeks to ensure it continues to work efficiently.

  1. Mix 50ml/1.7oz of white vinegar with 100ml/3.4oz of cold water to descale the bottle warmer. Switch on the bottle warmer, select the milk warming setting for contents under 180ml/6oz and let the appliance operate for 10 minutes. Leave the solution in the bottle warmer until all scale has dissolved  (Fig. 15).
Note: You can also use citric acid-based descalers.
Note: Do not use other types of descalers.
  2. Unplug the bottle warmer before you empty it (Fig. 12).
  3. Empty the bottle warmer and rinse its inside thoroughly. If you still see traces of scale after rinsing, repeat the descaling procedure (Fig. 13).

Philips SmartClean System

Philips SmartClean System

INTRODUCTION

What can I use my Philips SmartClean System for?

If you are curious about the functionality of your Philips SmartClean System please read further on.

Uses of the Philips SmartClean System

The Philips SmartClean System can be used to charge, clean and lubricate your Philips Shaver. The SmartClean Plus (model number 5.2) also comes with a drying program.

The Philips SmartClean 5.1 system is compatible with all Philips shavers in Series 7000 and Series 5000 (S51xx – S56xx).

The Philips SmartClean 5.2 system is compatible with all Philips shavers in Series 9000.

Where can I find the model number and the serial number of my Philips shaver?

You can find the model and serial number of your Philips shaver on the reverse side of the shaver. The serial number consists of 9 digits.

Can I charge my Philips shaver after every shave?

Yes, you can recharge your shaver after every shave. The battery in your Philips shaver is a lithium-ion battery which allows you to recharge it every day.

Which foam or gel can I use with my Philips shaver?

You can use any type of shaving foam or gel available in the supermarket or drugstore with your wet and dry Philips Shaver. If you have sensitive skin, we advise you to use a shaving foam or gel for sensitive skin.

Does using a foam of gel effect my shaver’s performance?

Wet shaving with foam or gel uses more energy and can thus drain your shaver’s battery much faster. If you use your Philips Shaver for dry shaving only, the battery can last much longer.

Is it better to dry or wet shave with my Philips Shaver?

Both dry and wet shaving have their own advantages. It comes down to your personal choice of shaving. Some points to consider are as follows:

  • Dry shaving can be done almost anywhere, even on the go, and there is hardly any cleaning involved.
  • Wet shaving feels refreshing and is often beneficial for sensitive skin as it reduces friction and irritation caused by a blade.
  • Can I replace the battery of my Philips shaver?
  •  Your Philips Shaver comes with a customized built-in battery. Do not try to replace the battery yourself. If you are having trouble charging your shaver read our article on this issue or contact us for further help.
  • How do I get the best results with my Philips Shaver?
  • To get the best results from your Philips Shaver, follow our tips and tricks outlined below.
  • Allow your skin an adjustment period
  • If you are a new user of the Philips Shaver, keep in mind that your skin needs to adapt to the electric razor. This means that your skin may feel slightly irritated in the beginning. Allow yourself an adjustment period of two to three weeks with your new Philips Shaver.
  • You can also use a gentle moisturizer or aftershave lotion to minimize skin irritation after shaving.
  • Pre-trim your long facial hair
  • Shaving long hair can be uncomfortable and may lead to skin irritation.
  • If you have not shaved for a couple of days and have a heavy beard, it is a good idea to trim your beard before you start shaving. This technique also helps in reducing shaving time.
  • Some Philips Shavers come with a trimming attachment that you can use to trim your beard. Otherwise, use your normal beard trimmer.
  • Be gentle
  • While shaving, it is important to be gentle, especially if you have sensitive skin prone to irritation. Do not press the shaver too hard against your skin. Only apply a gentle pressure which makes your facial hair stand upright and makes it easier for the shaver blades to catch and cut them.
  •  Gentle pressure also reduces friction between the shaver and your skin, resulting in a more comfortable experience.

How do I charge my Philips Shaver using the wireless Qi pad?

If you have a Philips Shaver that comes with a charging pad, this means that you can benefit from wireless charging. To find out details on how to charge your shaver on a wireless Qi pad read our instructions below.

  3. Let the filter air dry thoroughly. Put it back on the base and close the filter cover. Note: Clean the filter at least every 4 weeks to ensure that it continues to filter effectively

Descaling

The sterilization process is extremely important to ensure the most hygienic standards for your baby. Limescale deposits can slow down the sterilization cycle and even impair its effectiveness. Limescale is the hard and chalky deposit. Depending on the water type in your area, limescale can have different appearances ranging from snow white looking powder to brownish stains. The harder the water, the faster scale builds up. It builds up in appliances as the residue of minerals naturally contained in water, which fail to evaporate when water is heated. Although it is not harmful as such, it is unsightly, hard to clean and can impair the operation of appliances or damage their components if allowed to build up. Descale the sterilizer at least every 4 weeks to ensure it works efficiently

  1. Pour 90 ml/3 oz of white vinegar (5% acetic acid) and 30 ml/1 oz of water into the water reservoir.
  2. Place the small basket on the base. Place the lid on top of the small basket.
  3. Turn the on/off button to “Sterilize” mode. Then press it to switch on the appliance. Note: Place the small basket on the base to prevent hot liquid from splashing out.
  4. Let the appliance operate for 5 minutes, and then switch it off. Press the on/off button to switch off the appliance. 5 min
  5. Empty the water reservoir and rinse it thoroughly. If you still see traces of scale, remove it by sponge. Rinse again and wipe the base with a damp cloth.
  6. Rinse the small basket and lid as well to remove vinegar solution. Note: You can also use citric acid based descalers. Note: Do not use other types of descalers.

When should I descale my sterilizer? Why is the sterilizing time so short? You did not add enough water for sterilizing Pour exactly 130 ml/45 oz water directly into the water reservoir of the base
Why is there still much water remaining on the heating plate after sterilizing? The heating plate may be blocked by the limescale The sterilizer should be descaled at least every 4 weeks See section “Descaling”

FAQS

Do you need to dry the steam drops?

If you are using the items right away there is no need to dry them because the water is considered sterile. If you are going to put them away then yes the items need to be dry. The CDC says they need to be AIR dried so germs are not transferred to the baby bottles and whatnot from whatever would be used to dry them.

Yes 8oz bottles fit perfectly

Can it be used with avent glass bottles?

Philips Avent Microwave steam sterilizer is compatible with all Philips Avent bottles.

Does it dries the bottles ?

No, it doesn’t dry them and if left for a long time in the unit, they will gather condensation in them. Best to get a drying rack for your bottles.

What is the extra white plastic piece this comes with? It’s shaped kind of like a U.

It’s for you to hold the item you want to get out of the sterilizer. Cause its very hot when you open it and so not to use your hand.

Can this be used with stainless steel bottles?

Metal can go in the microwave, it’s very thin metal that can’t (think tinfoil, or plates with tiny bits of metal). The inside of your microwave is actually surrounded by a big sheet of metal. Metal causes the waves in the microwave to bounce off of it, keeping them inside of the microwave and heating up the food. If you put a stainless steel pan filled with water with a cover inside the microwave and turn it on, nothing is going to blow up, but the water will not heat up either. The stainless steel will just cause the waves to bounce off of it.

Can this be used to sterilize other bottles like the medela baby bottles?

It seems like anything you can fit inside the container would be able to be sterilized.

Can this be used to sterilize jewelry?

Can you use Como Tomo silicone bottles with this?

If they are the same size as regular bottles they should fit. We use nuk 10oz bottles with this and it works fine.

Can you use other brands of bottles or does it have to be Avent?

It is made specifically to fit Avent bottles, but it will fit anything close to that size. The bottles may fall over if the opening isn’t as wide.
