Preparing the appliance
Pull out and fill the water tank – Fig. 1 and 2.
Put it back in place by pressing firmly and closing the lid again – Fig. 3.
Open the coffee bean container lid. Add the coffee beans – Fig. 4.
Close the coffee bean container lid again.

Do not fill the water tank with hot water, milk or any other liquid. If you turn on the appliance when the water
tank is not in place or not correctly filled (under the “min.” level,), the light will come on and making an espresso
or a cup of coffee will be made impossible.

NEVER PUT GROUND COFFEE IN THE COFFEE CONTAINER.
It is recommended that you do not use oily, caramelised or flavoured coffee beans for this appliance. These kinds of beans may damage the appliance.
Check that the coffee beans do not contain any foreign particles such as grit, as any damage caused by the presence of foreign particles will invalidate the guarantee.
Do not put water into the coffee bean container.
Remember to fit the drip tray to avoid wastewater flowing onto the work surface and staining it or scalding you. Check that your water tank is clean.

Initialization cycle – total duration: around 3 minutes
Turn on the appliance by pressing the button – Fig. 5. The light is constant. Put a container with a minimum capacity of 0.6 liters underneath the two coffee outlets and steam nozzle. Press the – Fig. 6 button: the appliance starts the initialization cycle for rinsing off the steam and coffee circuits. The light flashes. The cycle is finished when the light becomes constant. The appliance is now ready to use.
It is preferable to rinse the 2 circuits out at least once after the appliance has not been used for several days. Each time you plug your appliance in, it will carry out an initialization cycle.

Preparing the grinder
You can choose the strength of your coffee by setting the coffee bean grinding fineness. The finer the grinding setting, the stronger and creamier the coffee should be. Set the desired fineness for grinding by turning the ‘Grinding fineness setting’ knob. Turn to the left for a finer grind. Turn to the right for a coarser grind.

CHANGE THE SETTING DURING GRINDING.
Never force the grinding fineness setting button.

PREPARING ESPRESSO AND LONG COFFEES

YOUR APPLIANCE IS DESIGNED TO MAKE COFFEE FROM COFFEE BEANS ONLY.
When you first make coffee with the appliance or after a long period of absence or a cleaning or scale removal procedure, a little steam and hot water will come out of the steam nozzle (priming). Splashing or scalding may occur if the coffee outlets are set too high in relation to the size of the cups.

Note:
The amount of water needed to make espresso is between 30 and 70 ml.
The amount of water needed to make a coffee is between 80 and 220 ml.

Production of espresso or coffee
Plugin your appliance.
Press the button. The light will flash during the pre-heating and initialization cycle. The light becomes constant. Put a cup under the coffee outlets. You can lower or raise the coffee outlets to suit the size of your cups – Fig. 7. Select the key to getting a strong espresso or the key to get a standard espresso – Fig. 8. You can change the volume of water at any time – Fig. 9. To stop coffee flowing into the cup, you can either again press one of the keys or turn the knob to the min. position.

The ground coffee is moistened with a little hot water after the grinding stage. A few moments later, percolation as such starts. Beyond a certain amount of coffee in the cup, we recommend – in order to obtain a stronger coffee – to divide your preparation into two separate cycles. Example 2 x 70 ml cycles for a cup of 140 ml.

2 cup function
You can prepare 2 cups of coffee or espresso with your appliance. Press the button the light flashes during the pre-heating of the appliance The light becomes constant.
Place 2 cups under the coffee outlets. You can lower or raise the coffee outlets to suit the size of your cup – Fig. 10. Select the button according to your choice, by quickly pressing the button twice. The light comes on with a double flash to inform you that you have requested two cups of coffee.

The appliance will automatically sequence 2 complete coffee-making cycles. Make sure that you don’t remove the cups after the first cycle.

If you press the button once and the button a second time (or the other way round), the second one isn’t taken into account.

PREPARING STEAM

Steam froths up the milk to make a cappuccino or a caffe latte, for example and also heats up liquids. As you need a higher temperature to produce steam than to make an espresso, the appliance runs an additional pre-heating phase for steam.
Plugin your appliance.
Press the button: the light flashes during the pre-heating of the appliance.
The light becomes constant.
Press the button – Fig. 11.
The light flashes during the pre-heating.
Once the preheating is finished, the light stays constant and you can start the steam production by pressing the button again. Press the button again to stop the cycle.

The appliance goes back to its initial position if the steam control is not used after 2 mins.
Warning BE CAREFUL, BECAUSE THE CYCLE DOES NOT STOP IMMEDIATELY.

Frothing milk
We recommend that you use pasteurized or UHT milk that has been recently opened. Untreated milk does not give the best results.

Pour the milk into your milk jug. Immerse the nozzle in the milk – Fig. 12. Initiate the steam function as explained in the paragraph above. Once your milk is frothy enough – Fig. 13 – again press the button to stop the cycle. To remove any milk traces from the steam nozzle, place a container under the nozzle and restart a preparation with steam (around 10 seconds).
The steam nozzle can be removed for more intense cleaning. Wash it out with water and a little washing-up liquid and a small non-abrasive brush. Rinse and dry it – Fig. 14. Before putting it back, ensure that the air inlet holes are not blocked by any milk residues. If necessary, unblock them using the needle supplied – Fig. 15.

Do not wash the steam nozzle in a dishwasher. To interrupt the steam function, simply press any button. If the nozzle is obstructed, unblock it with the needle provided. Steam can be produced for a maximum of 2 minutes per cycle.
WarningAfter the steam function has been used, the nozzle can be hot, and we recommend that you wait for a few moments before handling it.

Auto-cappuccino XS 6000 Set (sold separately)
This auto-cappuccino accessory enables you to make cappuccinos or lattes – Fig. 16. Connect the different parts to each other. Ensure that you do not pierce the pipe by keeping the button in the correct place. After removing the lid, fill the jug with milk – Fig. 17 and place a cup or glass under the auto-cappuccino nozzle – Fig. 18. Select the cappuccino or latte position on the special nozzle – Fig. 19. Start the steam, as indicated in the chapter ‘Making drinks with steam’. Once you have made the milk froth, place your cup under the coffee outlets and start a coffee cycle – Fig. 20.
To prevent the milk from drying on the auto-cappuccino accessory, ensure that you clean it thoroughly. You are advised to wash it immediately by running a steam cycle with the accessory jug filled with water in order to clean the inside of the nozzle. You can use the KRUPS liquid cleaner for this, available separately.

INTRODUCTION

By purchasing whole beans and storing them properly at home you can maximize the potential flavor of your home-brewed coffee. Grinding your coffee beans just prior to brewing is a critical step in producing great-tasting coffee at home. The Krups F203 grinder is designed to quickly grind coffee beans and dispense them easily into your coffee filter for brewing.

OPERATION

  • Place the unit on a sturdy countertop.
  • Fill the grinding chamber with the amount of coffee needed for the number of cups you plan to brew.
  • Krups recommends 7 grams of ground coffee per 5 oz cup. The whole beans can be measured with a standard coffee scoop or 1 tablespoon measure. Use one heaping teaspoon per 5 oz cup of water.
  • Place the lid (a) on the grinder base.
  • Plug in the grinder. To start grinding, press the power button (fig.2). The power will only stay on as long as the button is pressed.
  • The coffee will be ground fine or coarse depending on the amount of grinding time. For example, a coarse grind would require less grinding time than a fine grind.
  • When grinding is complete, unplug the unit. Carefully remove the lid and pour the ground coffee into a bowl or canister, or directly into your coffee machine filter basket.

Caution
Wait until the blades have completely stopped before removing lid. The grinder should be unplugged before removing the lid.

CLEANING

Keeping your grinder clean is essential to achieve optimal taste results. Coffee beans contain oils that will collect in the grinder and quickly become stale. The stale oils can contribute unwanted flavors to your brewed coffee. It is best to clean the unit regularly.

Be sure that the grinder is unplugged before cleaning!

  • Remove all coffee grounds after each use. A small soft brush or cloth is helpful in removing ground coffee from lid and blades.
  • Wipe inside of grinder lid and blades very carefully with a damp cloth.
  • Base unit can be wiped down with a damp cloth. NEVER immerse base unit in water or any other liquid!
  • Lid can be washed in warm water, using a mild detergent, or be placed in the top rack of the dishwasher and used on gentle cycle.

COFFEE BREWING GUIDE

THE COFFEE

Choose your beans wisely. It is best to use premium whole beans from a trusted brand or roaster.
Arabica beans provide the best flavors and have less caffeine and while Robusta beans are easier to grow and less expensive, they have less flavor and higher caffeine content. Robusta beans are sometimes used in blends to add a particular bitterness to the brew.
Beans can be roasted very lightly to provide a smooth aromatic taste or roasted dark to provide stronger flavors, and anywhere in between.
A good roaster will be able to describe the flavors that the beans will impart to your brewed coffee.
Note: Experiment with different beans and different roasts to identify one or several that suit your tastes.

  • Air, light, and moisture are damaging to the delicate oils that give the coffee beans their great flavor
  • Buy your beans in small batches to always have the freshest possible beans available.
  • Store the coffee in an opaque, airtight container and keep in a cool dry place.

THE RATIO
The amount of ground coffee must be carefully measured against the volume of water for each brew cycle. It is important to use enough coffee to avoid over-extraction. A small amount of coffee would be overwhelmed by a large volume of hot water. Krups recommends using 7 grams of ground coffee per 5 oz cup of water. 7 grams can be measured in one rounded tablespoon. If the resulting brew seems too strong you can adjust by using slightly less ground coffee.

If you prefer a much lighter taste it is best to brew at the recommended ratio and dilute the resulting brew with a measure of hot water. This allows the best flavor to be extracted from the beans while avoiding over-extraction of too small an amount of ground coffee.

THE WATER
The water is a critical factor in the taste of your brewed coffee. Filtered water is normally the best choice to help avoid the minerals and chlorine that can be found in municipal water systems. However, if your water tastes good then it should be good for your coffee.

THE GRIND

For espresso coffee:
The Krups Fast-touch (F203) is acceptable for grinding beans for boiler-type or steam espresso machines. We do not recommend using the Fast-Touch to grind beans for use with pump espresso machines. Pump espresso machines require a burr-type grinder such as the KRUPS GVX series or a similar professional style espresso grinder.
Burr grinders will prevent the introduction of coffee dust which can impede the flow of water through the espresso machine.

HELPFUL TIPS

Use of freshly roasted coffee is recommended. Contact your coffee roaster for advice. The freshness of the coffee only lasts several weeks after roasting. Good packaging can improve and prolong the flavour of the coffee. If you are unsure of the quality of the packaging, choose a recently roasted coffee. Coffee must always be ground just before it is prepared.

What coffee should you choose?

  • For an aromatic coffee Choose pure Arabica coffees or those composed mostly of Arabica coffee. Artisan roasted coffees are preferred as they lend a better complexity and delicateness to the flavour. For a variety of flavours, try pure origin coffees.
  • For an intense coffee Choose coffees blended with Robusta – not specifically 100% Arabica – or Italian-roasted coffees or specific Italian-flavoured coffees.
  • Keep the ground coffee in the fridge as this will lock in the flavour for longer.
  • Do not fill your filter holder to the brim; use the measuring spoon (1 spoon for a 50 ml cup, 2 spoons for 2 x 50 ml cups). Clean off any excess coffee from around the filter holder.
  • If you have not used the appliance for more than 5 days, empty and rinse the water tank.
  • Always make sure the appliance is switched off before removing the tank to fill it or empty it.
  • Always ensure the appliance is positioned on a flat and stable surface.

FIRST USE OR IF THE MACHINE HAS NOT BEEN USED FOR A LONG PERIOD

IMPORTANT! do not place heating elements on the appliance.
IMPORTANT! Remove the red protective cap from under the water tank.
IMPORTANT! the safety instructions are part of the appliance. Please read them carefully before using your new appliance.

RINSING THE SYSTEMS BEFORE FIRST USE

RINSING THE ESPRESSO SYSTEM
To ensure your first cup of coffee tastes great, we strongly recommend that you rinse the espresso machine with hot water, as instructed below:

Ensure you have removed the red protective cap from under the water tank (1).

  • Remove the water tank (A) and fill it. The water level should not exceed the “MAX” mark on the tank and should contain at least 300 ml (= equivalent to 2 large cups (2-3). Then replace the water tank, ensuring that the cover is closed. (4).
  • Plug in your machine. (5).
  • Press the On button (C)(6). On the control panel (D), the “On” indicator light switches on (D2) (7).
  • The selection button (D.1) must be set to the espresso position – (button not depressed) (D.1.1) (8).
  • Place a filter without coffee (F1) into the filter holder (F) (9). Slot the filter holder into place (E) and turn it to the right until it stops (10). Place a receptacle under the filter holder (11).
  • When the espresso preheating indicator light (D2.1) stops flashing and stays on turn the thumb wheel (D.3) to the left, to espresso preparation (D.3.2) (12-13) – The flow will start after approximately ten seconds.
  • Let approximately 300 ml of water trickle out (change the receptacle if necessary) (14), then turn the thumb wheel to position O (D.3.1) to stop preparation (15).
  • IMPORTANT / After 25 minutes of disuse, your appliance will switch off automatically as a safeguard.

RINSING THE STEAM SYSTEM
Remove the water tank and fill it. The water level should not exceed the “MAX” mark on the tank and should contain at least 300 ml (= equivalent to 2 large cups). Then replace the water tank, ensuring that the cover is closed. The selection button (D.1) must be set to the steam position (button depressed) (D.1.2) (16) Place the nozzle into a container filled with water (G.1) (17). When the steam preheating indicator light (D2.2) stops flashing and stays on (18), turn the thumb wheel (D.3) to the right, to the steam function (D.3.3) (19). Let the water heat for 20 seconds (20) then turn the thumb wheel to position O (D.3.1) to stop the steam (21). Return the selection button (D.1) to the espresso position (D.1.1) (26).

MAKING ESPRESSO

IMPORTANT!
If the espresso function is used for the first time, the appliance must be cleaned as described in the “FIRST USE” paragraph.
IMPORTANT! To prevent splashes of hot water, check that the filter holder has been tightened until it stops before preparing the coffee. Do not remove the filter holder while the water is flowing, as the appliance is still under pressure.

With ground coffee

The type of coffee you choose will determine the strength and taste of your espresso: the finer your ground coffee, the more intense your espresso will be.

  • Fill the water tank with tepid water and refit it on the appliance, making sure that it is correctly in place.
  • Plugin your machine.
  • For the best result, we recommend preheating the accessories beforehand (filter holder, filter and cups) by following the steps above, without adding coffee.
  • Turn on the appliance by pressing the On/Off button.
  • The “On” indicator light will switch on.
  • Add the ground coffee to the 1 cup filter using the measuring spoon (K) (1 spoon = 1 measure = 1 espresso) (22-23) then pack it using the tamper, turning it using a circular motion (K) (24). Once packed, the coffee measure should not exceed the MAX level (25).
  • For best quality, pack the coffee effectively.
  • Clean off any excess coffee from around the filter holder.
  • Ensure that the selection button is set to the espresso position (button not depressed) (26).
  • Slot the filter holder into place then turn it to the right until it stops (27).
  • The thumb wheel is set to function O. The espresso preheating indicator light flashes which indicates that preheating is in progress. Once preheating has finished, the espresso indicator light stays on (28).
  • Place a cup under the filter holder and turn the thumb wheel to the left, to the espresso position, and the coffee will start to flow (29-30).
  • When the cup is filled, turn the thumb wheel to position O to stop the flow (31).
  • Remove the cup(s).
  • Unlock the filter holder by turning it to the left (32) and remove it from the appliance. Do not touch the filter as it will be hot.
  • To empty out the coffee, invert the filter holder while holding the filter with the flap so that only the coffee falls away (33).
  • Wash the filter and filter holder under running water to remove the rest of the coffee (34).
  • To make 2 espressos, take the 2 cup filter (F.2) and add 2 measures of ground coffee.
  • To change the filter in the filter holder, ensure that the filter is positioned with the slot facing the lever of the handle.
  • IMPORTANT / The coffee flow is stopped manually. Do not move away from the machine when it is in use.

STEAM FUNCTION

The steam will foam the coffee (for example, when making cappuccinos).

  • Plug in your machine.
  • Remove the water tank and fill it. The water level should not exceed the “MAX” mark on the tank and should contain at least 300 ml. Then replace the water tank, ensuring that the cover is closed.
  • Press the “On” button; the indicator light switches on.
  • Press the selection button to activate the steam function (button depressed) (35) .
  • The thumb wheel is set to function O. The steam preheating indicator light flashes which indicates that preheating is in progress. Once preheating has finished, the steam indicator light stays on (36).
  • Place an empty receptacle or cup underneath the nozzle (37).
  • Open the nozzle system by turning the thumb wheel to the right, to the steam preparation function, to run the water through the system before the steam begins. (D.3.3) (38).
  • Turn the thumb wheel to program O (39).
  • To make a cappuccino, fill a container with approximately 60 to 100 ml of milk. For best results, use a narrow and relatively small container that can be slipped under the steam nozzle (G) (40). For best results, the milk and container should be very cold.’
  • Place the nozzle into the container of milk and turn the thumb wheel to the right, to the steam position.
  • For best results, foam the milk near the bottom of the container for approximately 10 seconds, taking care not to touch the bottom. Then slowly tilt the container and move thenozzle upwards until it is almost at the surface of the milk. Make sure that the nozzle does not leave the milk. To get a great foam, move the container in circular motions.
  • To get the best foam, we recommend using pasteurised or UHT milk, and to avoid using non-pasteurised or skimmed milk.
  • Once you have achieved the best foam, turn the thumb wheel to position O (41)
  • To prevent overheating the milk, do not use the steamer for more than 45 seconds (for 100 ml of milk).
  • You can start making an espresso by following the steps detailed above.
  • To prevent milk from drying inside the nozzle, please clean it after each use. To do this, follow the steps for foaming the milk, replacing 100 ml of milk with 60 ml of water. To avoid burning yourself, remove the nozzle from the foam (G.1) and wash it in clean water (42). Clean the steam nozzle using a damp cloth (G) (43).
  • Remove the drip tray, empty it and clean it using clean water (44-45).
  • Refer to the next section for manual cleaning.

GOOD TO KNOW – PRACTISE AFTER USING STEAM
If you want to make espresso after using the steam function, you need to cool down your coffee machine because the water is too hot for optimum espresso preparation.
Follow the steps below:

  • Make sure the knob is on position O.
  • Selection button on espresso position (button not depressed).
  • The red indicator light switches on indicating the coffee machine is too hot for espresso preparation.
  • Immerse the steam nozzle completely in a container filled with water.
  • Turn the knob to the right (steam position) to release the hot water and steam inside the boiler, to cool down the machine, until red light is off.
  • After around 10 to 20sec, you will see the red light switches off and the espresso light switches on. That indicates the machine is cooled down to the right temperature for espresso preparation.
  • Turn the knob to O position to stop the steam. If the red light is still on, repeat the above steps.

Your coffee machine is now cooled down, you can make and enjoy your espresso !

IMPORTANT! If you want to make a coffee after frothing milk, you should turn the knob to the espresso position and then set the selection button to the espresso position. After few seconds, the coffee indicator will turn off. Turn the thumb wheel to function O and wait until the coffee indicator lights up. During this operation, if the coffee and steam indicator lights are switched on at the same time, repeat the steps above.

IMPORTANT!
Warning! To prevent the milk from spattering, do not lift the nozzle out of the milk when using “steam” mode.

IMPORTANT!
Warning! The steam nozzle is still hot! Be careful you do not burn yourself!

IMPORTANT! After switching off the steam function, clean the nozzle immediately and carefully, as set out in the section:

Please remove the water filter before running the descaling program.
Once the procedure has been launched, follow the instructions provided on the screen.
It is also possible to run a descaling cycle via the “Maintenance” menu→ “Descaling”.
To carry out a descaling program, you will require a container with a capacity of at least 600ml which should be placed beneath the “One Touch Cappuccino” block and a KRUPS descaling sachet (40g). Fill the water tank up to the CALC mark and pour one sachet of descaler into the tank. The descaling program comprises three phases: a descaling cycle and two rinsing cycles. The program lasts approximately 20 minutes.
We recommend installing a water filter to protect your machine against the build up of scale, see “Installing the water filter” section in the machine start up.
    CLEANING YOUR MACHINE
We recommend running a cleaning program when prompted by your machine or following a long period of inactivity. The cleaning cycle can be accessed via the “Maintenance” menu.
  33. To run this cleaning program, you will need a container which holds at least 600ml, and which should be placed beneath the coffee outlets and the steam nozzle, and a KRUPS cleaning tablet. Carefully follow the instructions given on the screen. It is also possible to run a cleaning cycle via the “Maintenance” menu.
    EMPTYING YOUR COFFEE GROUN
  34. After a certain number of coffees, the machine will ask you to empty the coffee grounds collector and the drip tray. If the message “Please empty the two trays” is displayed, remove, empty and clean the drip collector tray. Remove, empty and clean the coffee grounds collector.

MACHINE TOP TIPS

  1. Light-medium roasts are the best to start with if you are new to the own ground coffee experience, this will help you find the best flavour and aroma of coffee for you.
  2. Use your machine on a regular basis once or twice a day, leaving your machine for longer periods of inactivity can be bad for the quality of the output. If you are leaving your machine for longer periods (eg to go on holiday) empty the water tank and remove the beans (store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place). Ensure you clean your machine before first use upon return by running a full coffee through to clean the system.
  3. Do a quick rinse when you use the steam arm to remove milk residue. A quick clean after every use can increase the longevity of your machine. Just rinse off and wipe the arm before going to enjoy your fresh coffee.
  4. When using a new bean roast, start at the most coarse grind setting, and adjust to taste. Be careful of flavoured beans or extra dark roast coffee as some beans become oily in the roasting process and can cause blockages in the grinders. The finer the grind setting the slower the flow of coffee to your cup. Always make a long coffee using a coarse grind.
  5. Good Crema indicates all is well; if you have a good crema on the espresso you’ve made, it’s a good indication that the brewing cycle and machines are well maintained. Follow the machine’s cleaning cycle indicators, as they are defined based on the water quality and heat preferences you have selected when installing the machine. Ensure you check your water quality every season (Spring, Summer, etc) as it can change through the year depending on your water provider.
